Last September, my husband finally bought himself the car he'd always wanted (I finally gave in and let him!) - a classic 1967 MG B GT.
Now I'm told that most everyday car insurance companies won't touch these kinds of cars at all, and as we were new to the classic car scene we arranged the only insurance that we knew about - through the MG club itself.
This policy covered the car for (an agreed valuation of) £3500 on a limited mileage basis (12,000 miles) at a cost of £250.
Now, don't get me wrong, we were very happy with the service we received from them. But, when (on a friend's advice) we contacted Footman & James, we found that - we could insure BOTH our MG B GTs (yes, another one somehow found its way onto our drive!) for £116 (half the price!). This covers the original car for the same value of £3500 and the second one for £2500. AND this policy covers UNLIMITED mileage. Needless to say we changed insurers.
The setting up of the policy was a very simple process - an online quote (which was confirmed in the post the following day). My husband telephoned to ensure that BOTH cars were covered for this price (we found it hard to believe!) and upon confirmation, the deal was done. Policy documents arrived within a couple of days.
Less than a month later a crack appeared in the windscreen of the second MG. We rang the 'windscreen claim' phone no. on our policy document and were told that someone would telephone us the following day (understandable as it was Bank Holiday Monday) to arrange a convenient time to come out. They did indeed ring the following day and came out that afternoon. They replaced the windscreen very quickly though it took them a bit longer to replace the chrome surround (again, understandable - as anyone who has ever tried it will appreciate!). We gave them a cheque for £50 (policy excess), showed them the policy document and that was it - job done!
We haven't as yet (and I hope we never do!) needed to make a claim on the main part of the policy, so I can't comment on that, but hopefully that part of the service is as good as the rest.
So if you're looking for good, cheap specialist car insurance (it's not just for MGs - thats just our thing!) I recommend you give them a ring or get an online quote (www.footmanjames.co.uk). You might just be pleasantly surprised.
This insurance company specialises in specalist car insurance at a very cheap rate which includes breakdown cover in the UK and europe and legal cover and do NOT need no claims bonus. I think you have to be a member of a car club.
My father has an MGB GT which they insure. I have a 1961 mini 850 and a 1967 modified mini (very modified, eg seams and gutters removed, 1400 stage 3 engine, vented 4 pot brakes etc etc). My insurance for the 2 minis, ... ...This is far cheaper than myself just on the 850cc 1961 mini through other insurance companies.
If you have a classic car/bike/lorry give them a call or drop by their web page at

I am very happy with their service and the cost of it. It is nice to find an insurance company that is on your side. ...

Advantages: Cheap, caters for all car types! Disadvantages: none
...young driver such as myself. Footman James did wonders for me, with unlimited milage and guaranteed agreed value. This fills me with complete confidence, offering European cover and any extras that you could wish for.
Not only does Footman James cater for classics, but for modern cars, kit cars and modified cars. Quotes for these have also been reasonable from my experience. They can 'quote me happy' more than most other insurers. Most will not ... ...it is 'too old' but Footman James recognise the fact that my car is slow and not powerful. Because of this the quote is cheap, as people are more likely to hit me.
A great quote and a good service, haven't had to make a claim as of yet, but relaible friends who drive other classics have had notihng but praise for their service.
See www.footmanjames.co.uk for details
I was asked to leave more about costs, but unfortunatly I am unable to leave detail ...

Advantages: proper people Disadvantages: none so far
I changed to Footman James after 25 years of insuring my classic bikes with another well known specialist who I had become increasingly disapointed with. From the start their service was excellent, their staff knowledgable and polite and their prices very much better than my old insurer. I suffered a breakdown (my bike did, not me) and I had to phone their breakdown service, again excellent, they were to me in less than an hour and took me the 30 ... ...winter rebuild I was advised to increase my agreed value by 50% I phoned them, they sent out a form which I returned with photos and a valuation and they issued a new certificate all for an extra £7. Such a breath of fresh air after the last lot who were only interested in taking me for all they could. Highly recommended. ...

Advantages: Cheap, flexable cover inc European options Disadvantages: Cancel the policy after 6 months and get nothing back
Lately I have had several occasions with problems getting to talk to them. They dont seem to have enough call centre operators.
One niggle is that if your policy has run for more than 6 months and you cancel it, there is no refund. This, as the call centre operator correctly points out is in their policy book. It's unfortunate you have to read a book in detail to discover these sharp clauses. Their number and breadth of options at a reasonable price ... ...their operators they are helpful, polite and effecient. However the acid test must be it there is a penny pinching policy in place when staffing their telephone call centre and unwarranted policy of keeping part premiums even if there is no vechicle to cover must call into question the mechanisms behind the whole of this service. I didn't make a claim on my policy and was with them for several years, just as well I didn't have to. ...

Advantages: Convertible, but hard roof, price Disadvantages: windows rattles, unuser friendly seats
a bargain at 15K.
I have found an insurance that would consider it as a hardtop - FootmanJames.
Now, in the last 6 month we have had the car, we had to change the passenger seat twice. The seat is not the most user friendly thing in the car and involves a mechanism that you could only describe as diabolical. Once the roof is up, the windows do tend to rattle a bit which can be annoying and finally with all that engineering, you might say that potentially there are a lot more things that can go wrong.
However, the 206cc will be 3 years old come next year which means that spare parts will be available from other sources than Peugeot itself which is great news since part at Peugeot can be rather dear. ...
Advantages: Looks, economy, reliability, fun Disadvantages: Insurance issues, jealousy
, Privilege and FootmanJames are popular with Twingo owners here.
If you want to be different but haven't got deep pockets, you need a Twingo. I challenge you to drive one and not smile while doing so.
With the range-topping Initiale available for under nine grand*, an air-conditioned, full leather interior with the most supportive seats you'll find in this class; all mounted in a shiny metallic case with alloy wheels is withing everyone's reach.
I'll say it again, go on - you really do know that you want to...
*As at April 2004, the Initiale 16v 5-speed manual is priced at 12850 in France. Take of the French VAT (19.6%) and add British VAT to the result, and that's about £8500 (Exchange rates subject to change). ...
Advantages: A car that INCREASES in value for a change Disadvantages: You'll never get your husband in off the drive (or is that another advantage?!)
'd think though). EBAY's always worth a look too. The parts aren't that expensive either. Running costs are on par with a 'normal' car. Cheaper on some things - no road tax requires on pre 1973 models. Classic car insurance can be obtained through the MG club or we got ours from FootmanJames (see my review).
And the best thing of all, unlike most other cars, an MG's value (as long as you look after her) will actually INCREASE! We have just in the last week or so sold the 1967 GT for a sum that covered the original purchase price, the cost of the work we did to her and the running costs for the last 10 months. Not bad, eh?!
Now I am aware that there are some people that cannot see the attraction and think that we're nuts driving a car that's as old, and sometimes as temperamental as we are - but there are also just as many (if not more ...
