In my experience these opinions are unfair. The last Capri roled off the production line in 1987 - any car that old is going to need a bit of TLC to keep it on the road! But the Capri is basically a good, strong, simple design, most work can easily be attempted by a novice mechanic, and the rewards are huge! I bought my first Capri last year - a C reg 1.6 laser for £350 (Yes!!- £350!) With 6 months tax. I was expecting to spend at least that again on sorting it but I was wrong! After welding a few patches down below, and only the most basic of services - I have now completed over 11'000 miles in her without missing a beat! But beware! There are some old dogs about so make sure you check the car completely before parting with any money (for good advice on what to check, go to www.fordcaprilaser.co.uk)
Now is the time to buy! The Capri is becoming more of a classic everyday and consequently prices are rising. A 1600 like mine will be the cheapest bet as they seem to have a reputation for being underpowered compared to the 2 litre model. I have driven both and although there is a difference in performance, actually preffered driving the 1600 as it offered a more rewarding drive - the extra effort required teaches valuable driving skills about getting the best from any car - and gives a bigger smile every time!
...still possible to find clean Ford Capri`s. Noone can miss the distinctive long bonnet of Fords 70s icon. But is it a good car?
There is nothing stopping you using this car as a day to day runabout - once you get used to its size. Inside it is well kitted out and the shells on early Capris seem to withstand rust pretty well. Capris had many different power plants, but the common UK ones were the 1.6 and the 2.8i. There is a vast range of other engines, ... ...there is plenty of room in that front end to fit almost anything! They also came in Laser form with more as standard and Special (the 2.8 Special) with differing body work. Some other models of note were the 2.8 Tickford Turbos and the Brooklands 280. The latter is extremely rare, being built as the final run in limited numbers. The last model Capris were `D` reg, 1987.

Advantages: Easily worked on, Roomy, Sporty and stylish Disadvantages: Doesnt hold road too well, rot patches
...is made by Ford. And Ford around the time of the manufacture of the capri didnt like starting in damp weather.
I had stating problems at some point with all three of them and it was always when the weather was wet.
It was a normal procedure for me to spray Ether in the air filter intake to flare up the engine when raining.
I had to change the carb on all three, but again, it was a hobby car and it was easy to work on.It was a 30 minuite job to ... ...is the locking and security of the car. Pretty poor, i had one nicked in Leeds and it must have been a piece of cake for the toe rags to get in, as lots of keys could open a 1976-1980 capri, so if one of these cars is now purchased, better locks need to be fitted.
They are fun to drive, comfy and roomy.
To a lot uf us avid Capri people, they were the dream car and once owned, you couldnt do nothing but love them, and thats why i am looking for ...

The Ford capri is the classic boy racer motor and 70's icon. But it looks so fantastic for a car that was affordable to the average punter. The trouble is that it has a reputation for being naff which is undeserved. The furry dice and Dave and Tracy stickers are optional extras in some peoples veiw and its a question if you could handle all the stick you'd get. I dont know if I could but it is undoubtably one of the best looking cars I have seen, ...

When i were a young lad, my father had a FordCapri1.6i in red. I love these cars because they look the part no matter where they are. Capri's maybe "retro" in style but retro is the way forward today. Some say that Fords are unreliable. I say they are speaking out of there....!! The Capri is just as reliable as any other car on the road. If the owner looks after it well then they will last a good 25 years or more!!!
My advice is BUY ONE!!!
So much fun that will last for years to come!!
These cars aint just for getting from A-B these are for getting from A-B in style!!!
So go and get one while you still can!!! ...

Auto Express has been around for almost 16 years. Which is nearly the same length of time as some misguided driving inspector in Reddish licenced me to drive motor vehicles until 2038. As I have been a (mild) car nut for most of that time, I remember buying the first issue when it came out. This week we are on issue 820, and I suspect we have had about three quarters of the issues in between. It is therefore high time I sat down and analysed what I like about it for you (nothing to do with the prize category for this month at all, you know).
Of course my motor tastes and needs (and budget!) have also changed a good deal since then. In 1987 when I passed my test and shortly before Auto Express was first published, my first car was a FordCapri Mk 1.6 1972 1600GT (XEX 836M) in White for which I paid a princely £80 for?and sold two ...
