Launched in 1970, revised in 1972 and sold until 1981 the 3.0 Ford Capri was an outstanding car. It was the closest thing that the UK ever had to an American Muscle Car. At 120ish mph it was extremely fast but it's strength lay in the tremendous low-down torque. It's 173lbft at 3000 rpm and one and a quarter ton kerbweight gave it tyre smoking ability to compete with a V8. It's entertaining 'tail out' behaviour made it enormous fun to drive and corners could be despatched with either the steering wheel or the right foot, or a combination of the two! I've driven many high performance cars including a Lotus Excel but never found anything that was just so much uncomplicated fun. I owned two 3.0's for 50,000 miles and would thoroughly recommend them to anyone.
Advantages: Good looks, low down power, sounds nice Disadvantages: to easy to write off
When i was a kid i always whanted a Capri. At the age of 19 a got my first, only a 1.6GL,but being a mechanic soon turned it into a 2.1.It was the longest i ever kept a car,i had it for 3yrs untill some old fart of a drunk driver ran into it.I have had no fewer than 7 capri,s since.
Including 2, 3.0s the first being a 1977 3.0 GHIA with only a 4speed manual gearbox.Very quick for a old car,but despratly needed a 5th gear. That was way back in 1985 ... ...fun in a car. Most of the local boy racers had XR3i s at that time,no compertition my 3.0 used to eat em.It even out handeled them to with the suspension lowerd, still lethal in the wet though hence the big writeoff.I totaly killed it and verry nealy myself.
I had one or two cars after including a Fiat Abarth 130,Lancia Beta 2.0,Rover V8 ect.But soon ended up with another Capri only a 2.0 though.
Now years latter at the age of 38 and with two kids ...

-33mpg isn't too bad for a car with that size of engine).
The FordCapri has always been a looker and has shown this off in the popular TV cop show, 'The Proffesionals' (which featured a 3.0S model, incase you were wondering). With the 2.8i, you definately get the performance to match, and not at the expense of reliabilty. The 2.8 litre Cologne V6 actually has a stonger block than the earlier 2.6 version, and the Bosch injection system is safe as a house. The only main point of worry with one of these cars is 'the dreaded tin worm', Iron III Oxide, 'That crumbly orangy stuff' , or put simply: Rust.
To be fair to the car, its very good for its age, although it can have some severe problems underneath. Have a poke a round before you commit to buying.
Investment potential in the Capris is rising, with diminishing numbers they are ...
with even more toys and goodies. It had all the equipment of the Ghia plus leather upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, on-board fuel computer, front fog lights and electric adjustment for the passenger seat aswell the drivers seat plus electric heating for both. I mean... wow! Has YOUR car got all that?
Then there's engine, the whopping great 2.8 litre V6 that the Granada shared with many of the other big Fords of the 80's - the XR4's, the Scorpios and of course, the mighty Capri (my favourite car!). They also made a 2.0 litre version, a 2.3 and a 2.4 diesel but to be honest these aren't worth bothering with - certainly not the 2 litre or the diesel - they just haven't got the power to haul a big car like this around. The 2.3 V6 wasn't bad but you couldn't get the Ghia specification without the 2.8 litre engine. And besides, of all ...
