I bought my 2.0 litre cougar in May 2005 on a V-reg plate. As I am on the road every day I decided on the 2.0 litre model for better economy. The car is based on the mkII mondeo platform and the handling is pretty good for such a big car, especially on winding roads due to Fords passive rear wheel steering. On the whole the Ford Cougar Handles very well.
The car is a four seater, the front seats are supportive, firm but still comfortable. In the rear of the car slightly cramped for people with long legs. The storage space in the boot is more than adequat, you could safely a couple of trolley sized suit cases and still be able to close the boot without removing the parcel tray.
The security on the car is excellent, Fords imobilisor and alarm. The car has prettyy good security for passengers should there be an accident. The driver and passenger seats both have air bags built into the side support. There is an air bag built into the steering wheel and one for the passenger on the off side of the dashboard. to back matters even better both doors have side impact bars.
The perfomance of a 2.0 litre cougar is similar to that of the 2.0 litre mondeo. Between the lights the 2.0 litre cougar is ok, but alot of cars are quicker. Ford qoute the 2.0 litre cougars 0-60 time as 9.3 seconds. However, I have slightly modified my car, so from a standing start I leave the standard 2.0 litre mondeo, 2.0 litre TDCI's and other 2.0 litre cougars behind.
The modifications to car are, Bluefin Superchip, Ecotec Valve, Cold Air Induction Kit, Cat Back Exhaust System, Eibach Lowering springs.
The cougar is a rare car which will always draw attention because of it's good looks. If you want outright performance though, go for the V6 and do the same mods as myself and you should expect about 200bhp.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Thanks for your comment, I think you were referring to the V6 with 200bhp. I see this is as you say "is rated at 130 BHP, with the modifications that I have done, I am getting a shade over 150 BHP with my cougar, which the chassis handles easily." You may wish to add that to the review. I also wondered what the fuel economy is like and any servicing or manitenance issues with this? Great car and review! -CH
