Having always wanted a Ford Escort since the early days of taking my driving lessons, 9 years on after passing my test I am now the chuffed owner of one. Four weeks ago I set out to buy myself a cheap run-around as my fiancé uses our main car for work.
I sifted through all the classifieds in the free local newspapers, read postcards in newsagents windows and then with the kind assistance of my sister visited a few garages who offer reliable bargain cars in the form of part exchanges etc. that would be within my budget.
I would say I was prepared to pay £400 maximum for a small 3-door which seemed more than sufficient according to those I had seen for sale in the papers, as I then also had to take into account the road tax, petrol costs and the most infuriating of all the dreaded insurance premium.
Having looked at the cars on offer at a garage in Bishop’s Stortford and finding none of them within my budget as a stroke of luck a small workshop around the back came up trumps and showed me a lonely Escort tucked away in the corner. It required minimal repair work, a service and of course an MOT and within 3 days (less time than quoted!) she was sat out on the forecourt ready for collection.
For an F-registration Ford Escort 1.4L 3-door with a full service, years MOT and even a £5 petrol thrown in I was charged a mere £225!! With just 90,000 miles on the clock and the clean state of the car overall (considering it’s age) I was definitely impressed and my dream of owning an Escort had come true.
Despite having manual choke I have not yet had to use it when starting her up in the morning although I guess the winter chills will get the better of that one. Overall the car is a lovely drive and with a 1400cc engine it has plenty of go when needed (not that it’s used around Brand’s Hatch with kids in it!) but not too much power that it guzzles the jungle juice. On average for short journeys around town on a daily basis you only need part with a fiver a week, which is pure bliss and doesn’t break your pocket.

If you look after your Escort well it should do at least 130,000 miles before things start to go wrong!.If your car has been previously thrashed and un cared for prepare yourself for it to be a M.O.T. faliure at around the 100,000 mark!! good op a little more info would be nice so could only rate helpful. Sam :)
