I have owned my Ford Escort 1.6 LX for 18 months now and I paid £2700 for it. It is not a bad looking car at certain angles but models without the rear spoiler does look a bit bland. It drives fairly well on small roads and motorways. I have added alloy wheels to mine which has slightly wider tyres then the original ones and it has made so much difference to the handling and road holding of the car (original wheels & tyres size - 175/65/R14. New alloys - 195/50/R15).
Right, which leaves me to mention the bad points about this car (Keeping in mind that this car is a P-reg manufactured in 1997). I think this car is very low set, and I keep scraping the bottom of the car on speed humps and my driveway if I have more then myself in the car. Because of this, the exhaust has been replaced twice already. The driver seat rattles a bit and does not seem to be bolted down properly. Actually, it was due to the adjustable height mechanism, which had a small slack in it after it is locked in place. The engine lacks power and seems forever for the car to get from 0 to 60 mph. The car is noisy on motorways but fairly unnoticeable on slower roads. If the sunroof is open and the car is moving at 30-50 mph, a strange and low thumping sound can be heard and is really disturbing. Apparently, the door locks can wear out due to Ford’s circular type keys and this model does not come with remote alarm. Therefore, you have to lock and unlock the car via the door’s keyhole.
First problems I had were minor, one of the parcel shelf holders bolted to the side of the boot had broken so I cannot have the parcel shelf there anymore. Water started to fill the boot when raining due to a plastic guttering cracked. This can be found on both sides on the boot by the rear lights. The bulbs for the headlights are difficult to change, as the access point for your hand is very small.
Since then, the more major problems started to appear. The steering column had to be replaced, I cannot remember what it was but it didn’t pass the MOT. The tracking seems to misalign very quickly after I have it corrected (I am not a rough driver and I don’t normally hit curbs or go over sleeping policemen at high speeds). This results in my tyres wearing unevenly and I had the front tyres replaced twice. The clutch and cambelt are to be replaced in 2000 miles time, which will cost around £750. The rear wiper has just stopped working.
But overall, even with these problems, I am happy with the car. It has never broken down or failed to start. Once the clutch is replaced it would feel much better and I would probably keep it until somebody crashes into me and writes my car off (which is why I replaced my old Fiesta).
Advantages: it's a ford Disadvantages: it's a ford
