I have owned my Ford Escort now for about five months and all-in-all I have been satisfied with it. I have had previous experiences with Ford cars and I have been quite impressed by their cars reliability, performance and practicalities.
This review is on both the LX and Si model as the two cars are almost identical. The only differences I know of are that the Si has a slightly different interior with White Dials and more sportier seats.
Performance ===========
First of all, after purchasing the car and giving it the 'Ive just bought a new car, lets see what it can do' drive I was pleasantly suprised on how the car picks up speed after 3000 revs. Being a Zetec engine it is set for economy between 1000-3000 revs, but as soon as you go over 3000 revs the car realises you are going for performance and the car starts picking up speed quite rapidly. If you drive the car sensibly, it has quite an impressive MPG figure. Ten pounds worth of petrol lasts about a week in mine and I do a fair bit of driving.
Styling ======
The interior of the car is cosy. The seats are comfortable and tastefully upholstered. The dash is set out nicely and it doesn't have them annoying plastic caps that tell you that the higher-spec model as something your car hasn't. I have the five door version which is spacious and easy to get in and out of. The Escort LX comes with central locking, electric front windows, drivers air bag, tachometer and trip-meter as standard. The 1.8LX has drivers seat electric-height adjustment (which is nice) and headlight aim adjustment. The rear seats also have head restraints.
The Escort exterior is quite sporty but practical at the same time. If this was a Nissan advertisement it would probably be saying something like 'Stylical' at the present moment. The rear spoiler rounds the car off nicely at the back, and the front fog lights give it that agressive, sportly look at the front. The colour coded bumpers add to the styling. The boot is spacious and is good for either (a) a good sound system install or (b) a lot of shopping. The LX has 14" steel wheels with plastic centre caps where the Si has 14" alloy wheels.
Reliability =========
Older Ford cars aren't exactly renowned for their reliability, after all F-O-R-D stands for 'Fix Or Repair Daily'. Joking aside, the only thing that has gone wrong with my car is a leaking exhaust, but that is probably due to the amount of speed-bumps around my area. You may hear all these horror-stories about suspension breaking and rust-from-hell but if you get a decent well-serviced example you shouldn't encounter too many problems.
Safety =====
As mentioned earlier, the Escort LX comes with a drivers air bag. Other safety features include side impact bars, seat belt pre-tensioners and anti-submarine seats. ABS brakes are/were available as an option as with a passenger air-bag. Ford standard features include a engine immobiliser, alarm and keycode radio with a removable panel to prevent theft.
All in all, the Mark 6 Escort (1996-2001) is a pleasure to drive, it gives as good as it gets performance wise, they are not ugly by any means and if you want a family car which isnt the size of a bus, look no further, they can be picked up relatively cheap nowadays aswell.
Advantages: Running costs, nice to drive, well specified Disadvantages: Reliability not with the best, engine raucious when worked hard
Ford's Escort has been the mainstay of the small hatch market for years, and with good reason. My rare edition of the 1.8 saloon has been a reliable and comfortable friend for the last couple of years.
Whilst a Golf might have more badge appeal, and the 306 probably better to drive, you just can't knock the value of the Escort. I picked up mine just as the Focus arrived and secured a very good deal on it.
This Ghia Si model has all the bells and ... ...full velour trim, all electrics plus ABS.
Whilst the 1.8 (105PS) Zetec is not what you'd call refined, it does produce a lot of low down torque, handy for quick getaways at roundabouts. Provoke it a little more and there's an admirable amount of surge, but being quite a heavy car it's no hooligan.
In 45,000 miles of ownership, it has let me down, however. The worst was the head gasket blowing, quite expensive to repair. Plus two bearings (one letting ...

Advantages: Smooth and Comfortable drive Disadvantages: Central Locking doesnt always work from drivers side.
...Car :- A Ford - i wasn't going to get a ford as my parent swear by them - even sleep with them if they could! My car is a Blue Ford Escort 1.8 LX 16v EFi. It's a 1994 M reg, Mk5 (The escorts on an M Plate can be 1 of 3 Models dependent on Reg date - mine is the middling one with bulging rear lights and smiley grill at the front). I bought it in August 2002 from a local independant Ford Dealer for £3000 which I thought was quite good as it had new ... ...It has the standard ford security system (alarm and immobiliser) but be warned - opening the boot before unlocking the doors will set the alarm off - very embarrasing! the Central locking is a bit tempremental - doesnt always work from drivers side - had the garage look at it several times but it only works for a short while. Have to unlock drivers door and then use interior handle to unlock rest of car. I have replaced the standard tape player (now ...

Ciao members have rated this car review on average: helpful Review of Ford Escort 1.8
I have had my Ford Escort 1.8LX for just over five years. Without any doubt, it's the most awful car I've ever had. After 80,000 miles and vast expenditure by my employer, the engine still revs up when I try to slow down, bulbs blow regularly, the o/s/rear wing is rusted through (Ford don't want to know)etc. Not to mention the leaking water pump (fixed under warranty) collapsed rear shocker, key stuck in ignition, numerous switch problems, fire in ...

Advantages: Cheaper on fuel Disadvantages: starting the engine on a cold morning.
I bought myself a FordEscort Encore 1.8 diesel due to the fact they are cheaper in fuel and ford being so reliable. Since i have had my Escort i have found that my back doors creek when i open them, even though i have greesed them.
My rear windscreen wiper occasionally decides not to work and my fog lights come on as a result of this, then if it is cold in a morning you can bet it takes a lot of effort to get the engine started and it keeps on turning over for a good few minutes before starting for you.Otherwise its a good starter.
The good points of having a ford is the parts for the car are cheap, all the ford garage staff are really friendly & insurance is cheap too (depending on age). The diesel engine is hardwaring.The style of the car inside and out is very satifactory and its handleing on steering is supberb.Need i say ...
Advantages: SO MANY,BUT PRIMARILY THE FREEDOM. Disadvantages: NONE TO DATE
It was always my dream to own a convertable car and it became possible just 18 months ago when my wife,Margaret and I purchased "our baby" the FordEscort Cabriolet 1.8 s.i.
The colour is a rich dark blue and it has an automatic hood in black,a good combination.
It is a great feeling in the sunny weather to enjoy that wonderful feeling of freedom and fresh air as we whisk through the Suffolk countryside and an extravagance of which we have no regrets!!!
She,(our baby) is just 5 years old,done just 49000 miles and is in immaculate condition,and we take great care of her.
I would suggest to anyone who might possibly read this opinion that "this was our dream" and I would strongly suggest that,if you have a dream of any kind!! that you should do everything in your power to "MAKE IT HAPPEN" DO NOT LEAVE IT TOO LATE!!!! ...
Advantages: Great interior, cheap to buy, cheap parts Disadvantages: Everything goes wrong at once
Im only 20 and I love my Escort. This must say something if it was designed for a middle aged family or as a fleet car. Im also a student so there wasn't much of a budget when I went looking for a car twelve months ago.
I have always been interested in cars so when it came time for me to get one I made sure that I was clued up n which to look at. I read all the reviews and even went as far as to get insurance quotes on the different models to see which would work out best for me.
I needed a diesel car because of the mileage I do and the Escort makes these miles pass by very cheaply. I can do around 450 miles per week if I'm busy so the 45mpg I get from the Escort really makes me smile.
As with all fords the interior is excellent. For a car of this price (I paid around £1400 for a 1996 model), I haven't seen a car ...
