I have owned my Ford Escort now for about five months and all-in-all I have been satisfied with it. I have had previous experiences with Ford cars and I have been quite impressed by their cars reliability, performance and practicalities.
This review is on both the LX and Si model as the two cars are almost identical. The only differences I know of are that the Si has a slightly different interior with White Dials and more sportier seats.
Performance ===========
First of all, after purchasing the car and giving it the 'Ive just bought a new car, lets see what it can do' drive I was pleasantly suprised on how the car picks up speed after 3000 revs. Being a Zetec engine it is set for economy between 1000-3000 revs, but as soon as you go over 3000 revs the car realises you are going for performance and the car starts picking up speed quite rapidly. If you drive the car sensibly, it has quite an impressive MPG figure. Ten pounds worth of petrol lasts about a week in mine and I do a fair bit of driving.
Styling ======
The interior of the car is cosy. The seats are comfortable and tastefully upholstered. The dash is set out nicely and it doesn't have them annoying plastic caps that tell you that the higher-spec model as something your car hasn't. I have the five door version which is spacious and easy to get in and out of. The Escort LX comes with central locking, electric front windows, drivers air bag, tachometer and trip-meter as standard. The 1.8LX has drivers seat electric-height adjustment (which is nice) and headlight aim adjustment. The rear seats also have head restraints.
The Escort exterior is quite sporty but practical at the same time. If this was a Nissan advertisement it would probably be saying something like 'Stylical' at the present moment. The rear spoiler rounds the car off nicely at the back, and the front fog lights give it that agressive, sportly look at the front. The colour coded bumpers add to the styling. The boot is spacious and is good for either (a) a good sound system install or (b) a lot of shopping. The LX has 14" steel wheels with plastic centre caps where the Si has 14" alloy wheels.
Reliability =========
Older Ford cars aren't exactly renowned for their reliability, after all F-O-R-D stands for 'Fix Or Repair Daily'. Joking aside, the only thing that has gone wrong with my car is a leaking exhaust, but that is probably due to the amount of speed-bumps around my area. You may hear all these horror-stories about suspension breaking and rust-from-hell but if you get a decent well-serviced example you shouldn't encounter too many problems.
Safety =====
As mentioned earlier, the Escort LX comes with a drivers air bag. Other safety features include side impact bars, seat belt pre-tensioners and anti-submarine seats. ABS brakes are/were available as an option as with a passenger air-bag. Ford standard features include a engine immobiliser, alarm and keycode radio with a removable panel to prevent theft.
All in all, the Mark 6 Escort (1996-2001) is a pleasure to drive, it gives as good as it gets performance wise, they are not ugly by any means and if you want a family car which isnt the size of a bus, look no further, they can be picked up relatively cheap nowadays aswell.
