The Sierra RS Cosworth was the first production turbo powered Ford which caused a huge impact on the world of motor sport from 1985 to 1992 when the last Sierra RS Cosworth was made. The mk1 Sierra RS Cosworth had no ABS (Anti Lock Braking) system, it was extremely raw (and somewhat prone to throwing you off the road on corners when the unexpected happens) this car was well known for the huge whale tail boot spoiler that you can’t forget. By the time the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth arrived in 1998 the development of car technology was excelling in leaps and bounds although this was still rear wheel drive the car was more manageable to drive. In 1990 the Sapphire 4x4 was launched although it had 0 – 60 time slower than its predecessors (a maximum of 0.5 seconds difference) the handling ability blew them away.
The Escort RS Cosworth was launched in 1992; it lived up to its name by being more powerful, faster and with outstanding handling, far better than the Sierra. It also made its name in the World Rally Championships by being at the time one of the fastest cars participating, and is still used by privateers in the world of rallying.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx About the car xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The first rolled of the production line in 1992 (K plate) and production finished in 1996 (N plate (although some were registered as a P plate bought after the registration change in August 1996)). The 1992 – 1995 Escort RS Cosworth had a Garrett T34 turbo producing 227 BHP a top speed of about 145 MPH and a 0 – 60 time of 5.9 seconds. A downside to the large turbo is that it suffers from a large amount of turbo lag (the time delay from when the accelerator is pressed to the time of when the turbo gets to full boost pressure), but can be forgiven with the handling and the ride and the power the car gets once the turbo is running at full boost. (I personally added a dump valve which eradicated some of the lag when changing gear, as the dumb valve will allow the turbo to keep spinning and not stall when you change gear, and thus when you apply the accelerator the turbo does not have to start at 0 rpm to get to full speed.) The looks are great and once again the whale tail was added to the car to make the car stand out in people’s minds, and also to help create down force for cornering. Remove the whale tail and you will increase the top speed and acceleration time but it does make the car into a straight line hero.
In 1995 the Escort T25 was launched with a smaller Garrett T25 turbo that produced the same 227 BHP but with a 5.7 second 0 – 60 time as the turbo doesn’t suffer from the same amount of lag as the T34.
The Escort came in 3 models the Standard, Motorsport and the Luxury. All 3 models came with the same engine but the main difference in the specifications was mainly the interior. In the Luxury the interior has leather seats, air conditioning, CD radio etc, the Motorsport was a stripped out version and the standard had a basic fan heater, normal cloth seats etc.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx My Experience xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The Cossie is thirsty on fuel if you are constantly driving at full throttle, but relax hold the rev’s fewer than 3500 rpm and you get a reasonable fuel consumption.
The ride can be a little hard for long journeys so I have been told by passengers, I personally don’t have a problem with the ride.
The handling is great you get so much grip from the whale tail pushing the back end down that it sticks to the road whilst going around corners, even when you think that you should be off the road in a field some where. I have not had any nasty surprises half way round a bend of the car letting go.
The car is well built and if you service regularly it is reliable. Getting parts for the car from Ford can be a waiting game as the specialist parts generally have to be ordered in, though there are many aftermarket companies available which can provide near enough any part you require or an alternative. The cost for these parts is simply you pay for what you get, if you want a unreliable/cheap part that will wear quickly buy cheap, this car is a high performance car don’t scrimp on the cost of vital parts and you will have a far better experience, because of the large amount of aftermarket parts available you can shop around for a decent part and try and barter with some companies to drop the price or give discount on multiple purchases.
Some of the older models that haven’t been looked after as well as others are starting to suffer from rust and this should always be taken in to account when purchasing a car like this, because the value of the car holds so well you will want to get the job done properly. It is worth spending the money if you have to getting a full re-spray rather than try and match paint. The car is up to 15 years old at the time I am writing this and although by matching paint and repairing areas that have been attacked by rust, then cutting and buffing the other paint area’s will only temporarily solve the paint match. In my experience with another car this worked for about a year but as the car started to fade the area’s that were only cut and buffed faded quicker than the area’s that were sprayed.
The potential that the Escort has is as much as your pocket can afford. This being with the modification, reliability and running costs, there are some 600 BHP track day beasts out there but are designed for a one day use before having to have parts replaced, the potential is there.
Safety for this car is good under normal driving conditions but as with any car if you exceed the normal driving speed then the safety is reduced.
Ford's customer service is very good they will always order the parts for you straight away the only problem is if there are no available parts in the country, then there can be six week wait in a worse case scenario.
The following insurance is based on a male 27 year old with an SP30 £60 fine living in a medium risk area with the car garaged:
A 1994 Escort Cosworth Luxury valued at £12000 with standard factory fitted security will cost about £1500 a year.
A 1994 Escort Cosworth Luxury valued at £12000 with Thatcham approved Toad Ai606 and RAC Trackstar security will cost about £1200a year and £150 for the tracking contract. (Well worth it as the tracker can locate any car within a max of 100 metres depending on the quality of your tracker).
I smile every time I get behind the wheel of this car it is phenomenal a true piece of automotive history and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a fast car.
Thanks for reading if you want me to expand on something or if I need to improve an area please send me a message and I’ll try and sort it out.
Advantages: Image, Performance, Practicality Disadvantages: Expensive to maintain, Difficult to source parts, Suspect reliability on earlier models
...for the car from a Ford RS dealer, and it had covered 20,000 miles when I bought it. It was my first performance car, and the first shock came quickly. I'd had it about 3 months, when I got a problem with a major electrical fuse blowing - 2 weeks at the local Ford RS dealer and £350 later, they traced it to be a faulty output from the engine control module. I had intermittent cold-start problems during every winter, until around 1999 when things ... ...that went wrong was the Ford immobilisor, which I was quoted £650 to replace, but decided to have it removed instead (for £90) as there was also a Clifford system on-board. When I sold it (in 2000 for £10500) it had covered 75,000 miles, and the engine was beginning to sound a little noisy and tappety. It had always been to Ford for every service, but I later learned that they use a fully-synthetic oil rated at 0W/40, when in actual fact the engine ...

Advantages: No deprecitaion. Bargain motoring Disadvantages: Breakdowns are likely to occure
Since Ive nearly reached retirement age, Im now looking for a small, spacious and economical car instead of in my youth when I went for cars wit the fastest 0 to 60 times and how much of a babe magnet the car was!!.
Ive had Escort before, but mainly old Mark I and Mark II models because as people with rear wheel drive cars say, I like to do it sideways. Ive also had a Rs Cosworth, but because of stupid insurance and lack of will power to stay away ... ...give it up. Im now stuck, cos basically Im skint because Ive got a wedding to pay for in a castle , a honeymoon to the Bahamas and Orlando, and because some turd piniched by beloved Horny Hiesta after only 8 hours. Ive been looking at Mondeos and a New shape Primera but becuase I didnot really want to get myself further into debt, I decided to buy myself another banger and do it up after running it for six months and hopefully make a profit.
I spend ...

Advantages: power, power ,power Disadvantages: Spoiler - sorry but i dont like it
...have to go to a ford dealer .
The 65L fuel tank is on the small size for a car which does ~35MPG but its all about the looks and sheer speed with these beasts. Like the sierra 3door cosworth the large double whale tail spoiler is the only down side to the car as I gives a “boy racer” look to an other wise manly car (not discriminating against women. its just a saying), but this is just my opinion! Sorry if you like them!
Front Recaro ... ...comfortable ( if you can get leather ones it’s a bonus!. Plus it adds value to the car). Sun Roof, Electric windows and mirrors, Central Locking, and Tinted Glass, are all standard equipment. The Escort Cosworth stopped being produced until 1995, in my mind a loss to the driving world.. Although if you are lucky enough to have one they are sort after. and therefore don’t loose there price
You can pick up these today for around £16,000 ...

Advantages: Reliable individual sports cars with good performance Disadvantages: Small petrol tank :-)
Not a lot of people know of Quantum, but the Stourbridge based 'kit car' (i use the trem loosely) manufacturer take the basis of a Ford, and transform it into a high performance street legal sports car. The 2+2 is my favourite, but they also have sensible saloons, the amazing H4 and the completely mental Xtreme. Performance is outstanding, the 2+2 I have on loan from Quantum is 1900cc with Weber carbs, Piper cam, gas dampers, the lot! And does it ... ...a 0-60 time of about 7 seconds, possibly less depending on driving style. I'm sure someone more qualified than me would shave that time down to about 6 secs. But thats fast in anyone's book. Quantum also have a decent website at http://www.quantumcars.co.uk which is informative for learning how to build their cars, or if you're like me, how to get hold of a 2nd hand fully built one. Pay it a visit if you've ever considered affordable performance ...

Advantages: none..except its cheap...but you get what you pay for. Disadvantages: Rubbish service. Wouldnot use them again
was £80 cheaper that else where. But I no longer trust them and insuraned else where when I know I will get good service if I have to claim again.
Stay clearer of this company.

In march this year I bought a modified fordescort. The car had been professionally done up to look like an Rs Cosworth.I rang my insurance company and several others to find the cheapest insurance was £1100 fully comp with a hugh excess.some even tried to insure it as a Proper cossie at £3500......I then tried Privilage and then quoted £400 fully comp as long as the vehicles horsepower had not increased and that I had an thatcham 2 immobiliser fitted within a month.
I always believe anything thats not a standard straight forward car to insure.Try the experts...not the telesales ...

Advantages: Cheap power, fun to drive Disadvantages: Brutal power delivery, Fiat servicing costs
of a FordEscort RS Cosworth, which completes it in 16.5 seconds.
So far, I’ve been very complimentary about the Punto GT. The time has arrived to balance this review slightly, because there are aspects about the car that are less than perfect! Continuing on the theme of performance, you may be forgiven for thinking that I couldn’t fault it. This is sadly not the case! Let me explain…
The GT has a very small engine (1372cc), but has the performance of 2.5 V6 cars (better than most in fact). In generates these huge power figures purely using a great big turbocharger. Most road going turbo cars have turbochargers running at a pressure of between 8-12psi (pounds per square inch), which gives a subtle “kick” to your acceleration. The Punto GT’s turbocharger runs at nearly 19psi. Great, you think!!! Well, not ...
