Since Ive nearly reached retirement age, Im now looking for a small, spacious and economical car instead of in my youth when I went for cars wit the fastest 0 to 60 times and how much of a babe magnet the car was!!.
Ive had Escort before, but mainly old Mark I and Mark II models because as people with rear wheel drive cars say, I like to do it sideways. Ive also had a Rs Cosworth, but because of stupid insurance and lack of will power to stay away from the beer to repay the load ,I had to give it up. Im now stuck, cos basically Im skint because Ive got a wedding to pay for in a castle , a honeymoon to the Bahamas and Orlando, and because some turd piniched by beloved Horny Hiesta after only 8 hours. Ive been looking at Mondeos and a New shape Primera but becuase I didnot really want to get myself further into debt, I decided to buy myself another banger and do it up after running it for six months and hopefully make a profit.
I spend a week end looking at 5 vehicles , plus the local auctions. I well in love with an N reg Turbo dieselMondeo with head gasket problems for £650, but missed it because the owner who was a trader wanted to do a deal with some thing else. I also fancy a 4 x 4 Shogun, but passed up on it because the welding requirements would cost hundreds and would no long make it cheap.Next came a Escort on a H plate and a 1991 model for £250 quid.Normally I wouldnot have given it the time of day because I would have expected it to be a dog. I was however drawn to it because it had only two owner and nearly 51000 miles on the clock.Its still had one months tax and test on it and was it excellant condition inside. The car is a three door L model with a sunroof and has a 1300 HCS engine.
It does have probelms with the car , mainly it didnot start of the key but a new battery at £17 quid sorted that out. The other area that needs attention is the body work, normally a car this age would have rust at least on the bottom of the doors and around the rear wheel arches. This car has non except for two stone chips, the paintwork in red is very faded however. Red paint work tends to bleach white if left out in the sunlight a lot and has happen very badly on one side. However if i machine polish the car and then clean the body work every week I should keep the paintwork gleaming for a while.
I but the car in for an MOT last week and didnot have time to look over the car before hand. It failed on one legal tyre, One rusty brake pipe and low brake efficency on the rear shoes. Its cost me £30 quid for the bits and plus about 3 hours in time whcih included making the brake pipe.
I insured the car, and Im how happy plodding about in car. It had a new clutch and exhaust fitted by the last owner. The car drive excelant, all the controls are light incluing the steering. Mark five Escorts got slated in the press when they first came out due to ride quality. I find no probelms at all, and actually enjoy driving this car. Its good on fuel at 35 mpg, but im upset that the lads in the jam sandwiches will not take notice of my car.Is that good or bad!!!!
I hope I havenot bored you all for too much, Im trying to keep writing as it was my birthday yesterday and my head still hurts and I dont really want to go out again tonight!!!!

looks like you got a real bargain there with LOW mileage too..even though it may not be the car you really want it will tide you over..and leave cash for more important things! Good luck..I'm still searching and running up huge bus fares...
