a few years ago i bought an escort xr3 convertible, on the advice of my partner, i never liked the look of the car it was a limited edition colour of half burgandy and half silver. The reason i bought it was that i was lost with out a car as i had just sold my nova gti a few weeks before hand.
i got mixed reactions about the car when i took it home. I saw it as a car you either liked or hated.
the interior was half leather and half material and the seats were comfy. it had electric windows and the the hood was electric too so it was easy to take down, the only problem was that up here in the very north of scotland its rare for the sun to come out so in the full year i had the car i only had the roof down 5 times!!!! But the times i did have the roof down a lot of heads turned - i suppose that happens to everyone with convertibles though.
alot of people that ive spoken to over the net or in person that have convertables a majority of them had said they've had problems with leaks in the roof when it was rainin, i was so glad i never had that problem with my car. The only problem i ever had with the car was when i put the gear box out, on a saturday in safeways car park, of all days it had to happen!!!!

My xr3i convertable is immaculate considering it is a F reg, 15 years old, I swapped it last year for a Peugeot 406 but I do miss my power steering,Although it is so old it has electric windows,mirrors,roof,and speaker direction and runs like a dream so I dont regret swapping but I have to buy a cheap run around for the winter so the xr3i can be garaged{to keep it in it's condition}. Nearly every time I've got the roof down I get asked if it's for ... ...me on the carrigeway tooting their horns to get my attention to ask me. So if anyone was thinking of getting one I would recommend it depending on the condition. I don't know what it is but it makes you feel special when you driving it with the roof down. ...

Advantages: Speed, looks, reliability Disadvantages: No power steering
At 17 years old my XR3 convertible is still going strong. Its fast, fun and great to drive. This is surely a classic car of the very near future. The reliabilty is great with no problems starting even in mid winter and the automatic hood has never let me down.
It can be a bit thirsty if you put your foot down for long periods, but in general is a sporty car with good milage per gallon, a comfortable ride and safe breaking and solid steering.

The insurance is knightmare stuff for a young male driver!!
If you can get one cheap go for it !! Watch out for boy racer abuse. Just remember you dont get many cars where the parts are as cheap as a ford escort!! ...

I LOVE EM! ABSOLUTE BARAGIN!
Im on My 3rd XR3I, I just can't get enough of them. All rite im 20 years old and should be sectioned for the way I drive them but they can take it! They love to be hammered in to corners and almost red-lined on straights.
At the moment im driving a 1986 Mk4 on a C plate, It's the basic model with no electrics, but with this kind of car the less the better. For those who don't know, It's a 3 Door Hatchback with a 1.6 8V Engine, I Think being the MFI model it was 105Bhp from the factory, and then theirs an EFI model that is around 110bhp, Mines been played with and has a Big Valve Head bringing it roughly to 130Bhp.
When you think there is basically, the shell of the car, the wheels the engine and your steering wheel so not a lot of weight for a 1600cc engine to pull along so you can imagine there ...

i bought a 18 year old xr3i..... 2 long term owners from new......low mileage . all origional..
bought as a fun car for myself...... WOW....... i forgot how much fun cars were...
ok...insurance can be high, but with thatcham approved immobolisers and alarms...... costs are reasonable...( for a 40 yr old ).
cheap to keep running... good consumption and reasonably well built car...... makes a good reliable vehicle .
Why do i think this is a fun car ....... its sporty.... handles well...... smooth gearbox......fairly economical and is not expensive to keep the engine in good condition..
I realise some may have been boy raced....but i was lucky mine had not been....i do get a lot of strange looks from people... but i don't care...
i regularly take the wife and kids out for a drive to the coast....we all like the car... even ...

ever tried to steal this car but it does have multilocks. I also sometimes use a steering lock aswell to be on the safe side.
The engine when i got it had a tendancy to 'chugg' at idle speed, since then i put some fuel injector cleaner in and it has solved the problem.
Also own a 1982 FordEscortXR3 which has been looked after and has covered 185,000 miles so the rumours about ford being unreliable are definately un true.
The newer Escort is pretty much identicle to the older models but has more modern styling and a few things have been imporved on such as the battery eating through the body. The gearbox is very smooth and the engine is quite fast.
Also, many replacement and performance parts are available from other model escorts at a low price, i got a set of 16 inch alloy wheels including tyres for £30 and most parts from ...
