At the moment im driving a 1986 Mk4 on a C plate, It's the basic model with no electrics, but with this kind of car the less the better. For those who don't know, It's ... ...I Think being the MFI model it was 105Bhp from the factory, and then theirs an EFI model that is around 110bhp, Mines been played with and has a Big Valve Head bringing it roughly to 130Bhp.
When you think there is basically, the shell of the car, the wheels the engine and your steering wheel so not a lot of weight for a 1600cc engine to pull along so you can imagine there pretty nippy!

When I have been looking to buy an XR3I, I notice they average between £500 and £1000. There around a group 15 insurance, mainly so high on the insurance because there a popular car for thief's "UNLESS" you properly alarm with Cat 1, insurance recognised alarm. I am paying £1200 TPFT, but im, 20, Male, got 3 points for speeding and 4 previous claims from accidents and theft, so £1200 to me is very reasonable.
Im not to sure on the exact 0-60 mph but I think it's around 10 seconds, which for my car being 1986 21 years old that's pretty good going. It did a top end of 120mph when it was standard now it will reach near 135mph! The handling is amazing. No power steering so difficult to drive but they stick to the road like a go-kart!
Advantages: small.. fun car....handles well and is sporty Disadvantages: can be high insurance
i bought a 18 year old xr3i..... 2 long term owners from new......low mileage . all origional..
bought as a fun car for myself...... WOW....... i forgot how much fun cars were...
ok...insurance can be high, but with thatcham approved immobolisers and alarms...... costs are reasonable...( for a 40 yr old ).
cheap to keep running... good consumption and reasonably well built car...... makes a good reliable vehicle .
Why do i think this is a fun ... ...is not expensive to keep the engine in good condition..
I realise some may have been boy raced....but i was lucky mine had not been....i do get a lot of strange looks from people... but i don't care...
i regularly take the wife and kids out for a drive to the coast....we all like the car... even the harsh ride of the sports suspension , can do nothing to make our journey less enjoyable. ...

Advantages: Comfort, reliability, easy to drive, some models efficient Disadvantages: Can be expensive to repair, lose value quickly
I had a 1991 2.0i DOHC Granada Ghia Saloon for over 5 years. I only got rid of it last month (October 2003) after the clutch and then the alternator went in quick succession.
These cars are usually very reliable and much better than most Fords for ride quality as well as realibility.
Compare the performance of this car with an EscortXR3i and there is no contest. There is similar performance despite claims that the Granada is under powered yet the Granada is a lot cheaper to insure.
Things to watch include:-
Raidiator cooling fans which frequently go. Its a common fault and is a fairly easy but time consuming repair job. Don't go to a Ford dealer for the parts, go to a scrap yard and look for the fans from any car with a CVH Ford engine as these DOHC engines are very rare in scrap yards.

Advantages: Cheap and cheerful Disadvantages: None
Styling a FordEscort is dead easy, and for young drivers wanting a good looking but cheap to afford car, the Escort is the obvious choice. With models starting at 1.1 litres, it is easy to get insured for little.
Ford's CVH engine was a masterful piece of engineering, and as such is easy to maintain, and provides good efficient service.
As for cosmetic styling, there are lots of options. Many companies provide cheap bodykit parts, such as RS Turbo bumpers, etc, or these can be found from a breakers yard. Another option is to smooth off your standard grey plastic bumpers and spray them to match the car.
Alloy wheels can be bought cheap secondhand. For escorts, a popular choice are the Ford alloys, such as those found on the RS Turbo and XR3i models. Again there are lots of places where these can be found, and they are often ...
ever tried to steal this car but it does have multilocks. I also sometimes use a steering lock aswell to be on the safe side.
The engine when i got it had a tendancy to 'chugg' at idle speed, since then i put some fuel injector cleaner in and it has solved the problem.
Also own a 1982 FordEscortXR3 which has been looked after and has covered 185,000 miles so the rumours about ford being unreliable are definately un true.
The newer Escort is pretty much identicle to the older models but has more modern styling and a few things have been imporved on such as the battery eating through the body. The gearbox is very smooth and the engine is quite fast.
Also, many replacement and performance parts are available from other model escorts at a low price, i got a set of 16 inch alloy wheels including tyres for £30 and most parts from ...
