Well its time for another car again! I have covered over 10000 miles in my Vectra Cd and decided to go small again. My Vectra has done me proud but rather liked the fuel and due to the change in jobs I would no longer need such a big and luxurious car. Having been around the dealers I decided to go for a Fiesta… yes I can almost see you grinning but have previously owned 2 1987 Fiestas I decided that my choice could not be better.
Well if you have never heard of the Ford Fiesta you should be ashamed of yourself. They have been around since the 70’s and millions upon millions have lived and died. The Fiesta was produced to rival such cars as the Austin Metro and Renault 4. A Fiesta is a small car mainly designed for city transport and in no way is it designed to be a motorwaycruiser. In my opinion the Fiesta is a good-looking car and is a brilliant run about.
Cost.
I think I will start off with one of the cars praises. Brand new the basic model will set you around £6000 but with the all new Fiesta coming very shortly you may be able to knock a little off that. I paid £3,495 at an auction for my W registered Fiesta Encore 1.3. I got my Fiesta at such a cheap price because A) It had 63,000 miles and B) because it needed a good valet and the cabin was very dirty and C) it was involved in a accident with a human so it needed a headlamp, bumper, and the wing and bonnet were dented. After these minor repairs
were carried out (after spending £450) I had myself a lovely car worth in the region of £5000! A good Fiesta with FSH and in Mint condition on a W plate will set you back around £5.5k with a few extras.
This car is insurance friendly with my quote costing around £275 with not a perfect licence. As far as maintenance goes hardly none is needed. I will have my Fiesta serviced every 10,000miles which will cost somewhere in the region of £90 at a Ford dealer. The new Fiestas are very reliable so don’t expect to have to fork out money for repairs.
The cabin in the Fiesta is quite dull with nothing to make it stand out from the crowd. Interior loos quite plasticy but most of the switches and controls are made well so I am assured build quality is to a high standard. The rear space is poor especially when compared with some of its rivals e.g. Skoda Fabia. I like the seats in my Fiesta as they help to giver the car an airy feel, as they are white/crème to match the cars exterior. All the switches are well laid out and are easy to use as there are no fancy features here.
In car entertainment
I just received one of the standard stereos from Ford, which was the Ford 4000. 2 speakers producing approximately 40watts power the system. The system has the standard cassette and radio, which produces good sound on either. I find the radio especially easy to use, as the buttons are large, so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road! The radio search is to a high standard and very impressive compared to my £16,000 Vectra CD. 40 watts may sound very little but it produces excellent sound quality for one of the lower range radios and goes quite a volume too!
On The Road.
Steering.
My Fiesta Encore benefits from powered steering which helps parking easier as it makes the steering much lighter I have driven plenty of Supermini’s and have found the general steering excellent. The steering is light for town use yet capable on sweeping corners. The road handling is very good in the Fiesta for a small non-sporty car, much better than the Nissan Micra.
Brakes.
The brakes are not ABS assisted but there more than capable in town and on the m’way. The foot pedal has quite a solid feel to it, which makes you feel more secure out and about. The brakes are a much, much better than the MK 2 Fiesta, which is expected really!
Performance.
Seeing this is more of a City car and not made for the Motorways performance is good. For a 1.3 its quite disappointing but the “ low cost” running makes up for that. The accelerating speed from 0 to 60mph takes a lethargic 14.8 seconds and goes onto to a top speed of 96mph. The Fiesta 1.3 can cope with speeds around 80mph but the noise levels rapidly increase after 85mph. The car is not ideal for motorways as it takes time to gather speed, which can become frustrating when trying to filter over into the far lane from behind a slow moving HGV.
Looks.
The Mk 4 Fiesta is very like the previous Mk 3 just with a slight facelift to take away the fish face look of the Mk 3. The Fiesta can be bought in 5dr or 3Dr but I prefer the 3dr, as I believe it gives a sportier look. The basic model looks far from basic with Body coloured bumpers and mirrors and 13inch wheel trims. Even though the magazines call the car “dated” I still think its one of the better looking Supermini’s for example take a look at the Yaris!!!
Engine range.
There are a few engines available with the Fiesta some quick and some not so quick e.g. my 1300!
· 1.2 75 BHP engine featured in the Zetec and Ghia. The 1.2 gives surprising performance results for such a small engine. It still gives 41.5 mpg and as far as performance goes its fairly nippy reaching 60mph from a standstill in 11.9 seconds and then be able to go on till past the 105mph mark. The 1.2 Zetec engine is one of the newer engines and it feels it.
· 1.3 Endura. 59BHP. The 1300 engine is the slowest of the lot as it’s the 1300cc engine transferred from the previous Fiesta. The Endura is far more sluggish than the Zetec on the open road but its made for town use really so I cant fault it. Don’t think by getting away from the old Endura engine you shall choose the Ka as this also uses the same engine and there’s little in the way of performance changes.
1.6i Zetec.
The Zetec 1.6 is a pleasing engine but still not going to replace the Fiesta Xr2i of the eighties. The is the most powerful engine of the lot. It has a sporty feel and a satisfying engine on all roads. Prices for the 1.6 Zetec start from around £10,000, for that money there is other cars would rather have!
1.8Td.
This is one of my favourite engines of the bunch but the one most likely of covered more mileage. The 18Td has the same sluggish feel around town as my Endura but on the open road it performs much better. You can’t fault the car for being a Diesel and it’s not the quietest of Diesels but its very economical and has good performance as far as Diesels go. If i had the choice then this would be my engine because it’s capable of over 50mpg.
There’s a good range of engines available but none that are really going to send your pulses racing. All are very reliable engines. Don’t worry about starting problems on any of these engines all that has gone…totally gone.
Colours and Trims available.
Unfortunately very few colours
Exterior colours.
As Metallic paint is not standard you only get the choice of 3 non-metallic colours:
Fords Diamond white is not as Diamond as it sounds. I don’t know whether the paintwork on mine has dis coloured but it’s more of a crème colour than Diamond White. White does look smart on the Fiesta but there’s 1 drawback with white cars… You have guessed it. The slightest bit of dirt and it stands out like a soar thumb.
Dark True Blue.
Dark true blue is a nice shade or dark blue but if anything I would have named it Royal Blue. I would not have choose the Blue for the same reason as the Red… Boring!!!. Most will say that the White is boring but there’s something about the white that caught my eye.
Colorado Red.
This is a bright shade of Red which cant is mistaken for anything else. The red is the most common of colours especially on the 1.6 Zetec.
There were 2 trims available with the Encore last time I checked. Cars, which are Red or Blue, get the Blue and Black trim and cars that are white get the crème and black trim.
If you decide to go for the Ghia you may have Leather seats or at least a wider variety of interior trims. On the whole none of the trims look cheap but the Ghia is in a class of its own!
If buying Used I can definitely recommend a Fiesta but if your after a factory fresh then I cant thoroughly recommend because with the launch of all new Fiesta arriving in a dealer near you soon re sale values will be hit hard for the Mk4.
I hope my rather long opinion has been very useful to you and I always look forward to reading any questions or comments you may have about this car or any others. Please rate with care and rate accordingly to the usefulness of this opinion.
Please can i make it very clear that i never ran nobody down on that occasion. I bought the car which was sold as salvage due to being previously involved in a accident with a human and oviously the damage was to say the least "noticable". LOL. Thanks again.
My Fiesta has vanished.
The Story.
My Ford Fiesta was left to sleep overnight at a small car park for the visitors and residents of a small block of flats in the Wood End area of Coventry. It was last seen at aprox 9pm. I heared and seen nothing of my car being taken. The Wood End area of Coventry is known throught Coventry as a housing estate which is best described as a "no go area" with a gob smacking crime rate and is very alike to the Scotswood Estate in Newcastle. I never dreamed of my car being stolen but its my own fault i should have gone on the bus!. Sam Williams . Saturday 11th May 2002.

An excellent review and great to read comments from someone who doesn't absolutely hate my make and model of car (like my Husband!).

An excellent and very detailed car review.

Sorry to hear about the loss. You are right about the sluggish 1.3 Endura. The 2001 fiesta I have has the Endura E, which adores the motorway and moves quite quickly. Good detailed review though.
Advantages: Cheap to buy, cheap on fuel, cheap parts, cheap everything really. Disadvantages: Engine from circa 1959, chassis from 1989, really should have been a whole new car.
