Fiestas, and me, we're in a love, I can't get enough of them, and I've purchased a 97 1.8D to get me to college and back, (about a 60 mile round trip each day.)
Now, I am a die hard petrol head, but the 50+MPG appealed, its a Fiesta, its Blue, I thought, I'll love it.

It struggled to get to sixty in two miles of clear, straight road, and the soot pouring out the back was causing people to flash their headlights at me.

Now, I am a die hard petrol head, but the 50+MPG appealed, its a Fiesta, its Blue, I thought, I'll love it.
Me and "Sooty" fell out pretty quickly, after jumping out a mk4 1.4 Zetec into a mk4 1.8 diesel, I promtply revved the nuts out of the engine and nearly blew it up on the way home. I thought, "I know these things are slow, but....." It struggled to get to sixty in two miles of clear, straight road, and the soot pouring out the back was causing people to flash their headlights at me.
One new exhaust and EGR valve later, (EGR valves are common fault on these engines,) she ran a lot more smoothly, and when she's "warm and wound up," she's not to much of a slug, but far from quick, or even nippy. The engine is supposed to run out of steam at about 96MPH, I've never driven "Sooty" that fast, but I can't see any reason she wouldn't get there, if not a touch over it.
Sooty, in here nine years have covered just under 160,000 miles, so she's a bit of a high miler, but these engines are based on some drawings possibly by Noah or Aristotle, their very simple and crude, but have practically 100% reliability, I've seen Fiesta vans that have spun the clock over three times, and are still rattling and banging away. The slightly odd thing about these engines is they have two timing belts, (one for the cam, and one for the injector pump,) these need replacing regularly (mechanic's who own them change them every TEN THOUSAND miles!) As if one or the other gives way, your in trouble, and cam belt failure is common on these engines. But providing you replace the belt and tensioners regularly, and keep on top of the servicing, (remembering to change the fuel filter every service on these crude old derv's) Its a case of "not an awful lot to go wrong." Rather than strict component reliability
The interior of the LX's (Derv Fiesta's of this time only available in LX) Have a cigarette lighter, sunroof, air recirculation, self priming pumps, and mine has metallic paint, I don't know if this was an option or standard. The Polar White diesel is probably best avoided, as the soot stains make cleaning it a pretty pointless thing to do.
These Fiesta's have the famed handling capabilities of the mk4, but being a bit front heavy, you can't have as much fun with them. Also the weight of the engine means they can much through engine mounts if not driven "overly gently."
Advantages: CHEAP TO RUN, CHEAP SERVICING, CHEAP TO BUY Disadvantages: SLOW, CAN BE CRAMPED
...other consumables in accordance with ford and i buy the parts from Halfords. Timing belts should be changed every 70 miles according to FORD, this will cost you around £160 at a garage. As for tyre life i have done more then 20,000 miles on a pair of front tyres that cost around £30 each, and expect them to go another 10,000 before i need to replace them. Expect around 40,000 miles from rear tyres dependant on quality of tyre.
INTERIOR:
I have ... ...central locking, electric windows and some other extras. Power steering make all the differnce to the bottom of the range fiesta, on a heavy car like this you need power steering, the rest of the electrics can be seen as a bonus. Generaly the inside is of good quality, its what you would expect from a car of this type
PERFORMANCE:
Do not buy one of the cars if you want to get from 0-60 in under 10 seconds, its not a performance car, and without ...

Advantages: Cheap parts, economical Disadvantages: Slow, minor electrical faults, noisy
Economy
Superstar, 50 miles per gallon.
Reliability
I have had two diesel Fiestas. The first was so reliable that I bought a second. That wasn't. Oh well. So I would say reliability is variable. My current car gets through glow plugs and suspension arms like nothing else.
Style
Excuse me? Practical-looking.
Acceleration
Poor but ok once you are up to speed.
Value for money
Good. Parts are cheap and easy to get hold of. Good fuel economy. ... ...Minor electrical faults, e.g. rear windscreen wiper and radio only work intermittently. This has been the case with both of my Fiesta.
Overall
Good for those who care more for basic practicality than shiny bits and speed. The car for those who can't afford a diesel Polo or Seat Ibiza! ...

Advantages: reliable economical Disadvantages: lacking in features
...car, I turned to the ford fiesta.
It was a straight choice between fiesta and a peugeot 206.
Price wise, for the same money I could get a newer model of used fiesta than the peugeot.
The biggest downside in the diesel model is its lack of features, no leccy windows and sunroof, not even a cigarette lighter (just a space for it). The interior is basic, no console, upholstery is comfortable but not as luxerious as some of the top range fiestas.
... ...car, especially mine in bright ford red.
Not being a bloke I wont go on about engine size and how it gets from 0 to 60 in whatever !!
All I want to say is that, its a great little car, being ford its reliable, and spare parts are simple to get, it has saved me loads on fuel to work than my gas guzzling rover, and I think it looks pretty cool, as does my best mate jules who too drives one! ...

Advantages: Econonical, Good Looks, Confortable Drive Disadvantages: When People Are Concerned A Little Tight In The Back
Great car very economical got me from Sheffield to London and back on 30 pounds, I have 99 model which has a nice modern look, Comfortable to drive. Space wise it has a decent sized boot for this size of car which has the potential for lot more when you fold down the back seats EG I had my full size mountain bike in the back with space a plenty. But can be quite tight for space with a few larger persons in the back, Very popular car so easy to find ... ...normally set you back a good 40 pound + but with a little trip to the scrap yard 10 pounds got me a wheel and a barley worn tyre so there is potential there for a bargain. One last thing for younger of us, me an 18yr old male with Zero no claims is paying a couple of pounds over a grand with is still not cheep but for my circumstances a cheep car to insure, In all a good car all round. ...

- i usally drive fast and the engine never says no, or problems came. Before i had an fordfiesta1.1 '91, opel vectra 1.6 '97, seat ibiza 1.3 '94, daewoo lanos 1.3 '97, fordfiesta1.8D '96, fiat punto 1.2 16v '00, and now the Demio that i consider one of the best cars i've owned.
- the only thing i didn't like were the cheap plastic interiors... but i think is only looks, because the car doesnt make interior noises or skeeks. ...
