Advantages: Reliable, very economical, quick enough even for longer journeys Disadvantages: Ride too firm, handling too twitchy, not as many toys as you might expect

=== Driving === Handling is good; but the ride is quite hard and the car can feel quite twitchy, which I find annoying, and the kids complain.
The engine is not the quickest, but it's the only diesel available on the 2004 Fiesta (the 1.6 came later).
To be fair, it's quick enough for most driving situations.
There ... ...car, but (particularly when overtaking) it can do better than it's 68hp would suggest.
You can tell it's a diesel, and I mean that in a good way.
Generally, this car offers a relaxed drive. The gearing is fairly high for a car of this size (28mph at 1,000rpm), so at motorways speeds it's less than 2,500rpm; but I can pootle about at 30mph in top gear too.
=== Reliability === Reliability is good; the heated windscreen ... more
(This is a review of the 2004 model, before the 2006MY facelift.)
The new-edge styling still looks good, and it's a practical shape. I still take issue with those big "cute eyed" headlamp lenses, but most small cars have them these days,
Interior
The interior is upholstered in beige, which looks nice enough, but clashes horribly with the bright blue exterior, and tends to show scuffs and marks easily. Seats are firm. There's room for six-footers. It's comfortable enough for long journeys.
Spec includes:
Heated "Quickclear" windscreen
Rear parking sensors
Front fog-lights (never need em)
Alloy wheels
Air conditioning
Electric front windows
Electric wing-mirrors
Disappointingly, there's no trip computer or heated mirrors, even at this trim level. I can't escape the feeling that even with the Ghia spec, the Ford accountants were trimming features to save cost.

To be fair, it's quick enough for most driving situations. There are occasional overtaking maneuvers that I wouldn't attempt in this car, but (particularly when overtaking) it can do better than it's 68hp would suggest. You can tell it's a diesel, and I mean that in a good way.

Reliability
Reliability is good; the heated windscreen failed early on and wouldn't clear on the passenger side (at first I thought this was by cost-cutting design - my Mondeo heated the whole windscreen), but was fixed under warranty. Everything else seems to work well.
Economy
Fuel economy is impressive: 45mpg on short journeys around town; 60mpg on longer trips. For me this compensates for the general blandness about other aspects of the car.Road tax is band B (£35), and the insurance is quite low too.
Summary
I've probably been spoiled by previously owning a Mondeo, and for a while driving a Fabia Elegance, but for me this car feels just so-so.
There are no glaring flaws - it drives well, keeps up with the traffic, and seems pretty bulletproof.
Advantages: cheap to run, great fuel economy Disadvantages: no ABS
...a leaking coolant pump which ford fixed on warranty.
OVERVEIW
The car is basically just a smaller, cheaper Focus, and runs exceptionally well. I have pushed my car to the limits, running it on very rough roads, up extreme gradients fully loaded and over great distances with few stops and it never let me down once. (the coolant pump leaked shortly after purchase and has been fine during these extreme conditions)
ENGINE
The 1.4 TDCI engine runs ... ...just under £6K from a Ford main dealer and depreciation has brought it down to just over £4K which is quite a lot, but I'm not planning to get rid of it any time soon as it has so far been a great car to run. I have had a great experience with it, and I'm over 6' and dont have any problems with headroom or driving position whatsoever.
I thoroughly reccomend this car to anyone looking for a ford, they are truely excellent cars in my opinion. ...

I purchased my Ford Fiesta with only 6000 miles on the clock. For the next 2 years, I had perfect, trouble-free driving, withthe exception of the engine cutting out at 70 MPH on the motorway, as the fuel heater element (built into the fuel filter) had shorted out. I put this down to an unfortunate one-off, however, as an engineer, I consider the design to be a poor one, as no one individual electrical system (bar the ECU) should EVER ... ...very difficult situation. ...£200 to £280 at the ford dealership so in the entire car is cheap to run.
The car also has dual airbags and a good standard ford alarm for the safety and security concious, which I believ should be the standard norm these days.
I would recommend this car for anyone needing cost efficient motoring with its great design and flawless economics and standard compared to rivals I would choose no other.

== Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.4 TDCi 5dr ==
=== Background ===I have owned my 2004 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi since it was 6 months old and have traveled at the time of writing (OCT 2007) 25000 miles though the car has done 30000 in total. The car lacks in one area, which is acceleration, however, this does not detract from a 5-star rating because if you're purchasing a diesel at this price point you should be doing it for the excellent economy - not for super ... ...Purchase Price ===While the little Ford is not as cheap to buy as some others, it's good for what you get. They lose value quickly from new, but then depreciation levels off, so as long as you avoid a nearly new car, it should make financial sense. I paid £8500 for mine 6 months old which considering it was the Ghia was good deal. At the time of writing then I could probably get £5k-6k trade-in. The local dealer keeps telling me that the diesels ...

Advantages: Cheap to run, Zetec handles really well Disadvantages: Bit plasticy inside, can get rattly.
I have a 2002 Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4 TDCi 5dr in red. Over 60MPG, very low insurance and cheap tax. Beware of the first batch in 2002 that didn't have the CO2 tweaked so yours paying £120 tax when the exact same car released months after is only £35 a year to tax. Very annoying! The Zetec has superb handly and most of the time feels very nippy with good pull in higher gears on motorways. It seems a lot nippier than it's 68HP would suggest. The car has a couple of annoying rattles from the slightly cheap interior build quality but there are a nice number of storage compartments and the cabin feels pretty good standard. Seats are comfy and there is plenty of room in the car. I am 6ft 2 and my left knee does sometimes rub a bit on the sharp corner of the dash by the heater controls. If you had a spare few hundred to spend ...

Advantages: Fuel economy and Looks Disadvantages: Some of the smaller features - fuel guage/handles could be remodled
I've had my FordFiesta Zetec TDCI1.4 for just over a year. I would never have dreamed of buying a ford, i've always had second hand Hondas in the past, but a 100 mile round trip communte to work every day meant i had to look at cheaper options. I have saved an absolute fortune on fuel. The 1.4 has been brilliant. Its got enough power for me to feel happy but the financial benefits are enormous. Its a great small car. Comfortable on the motorway and in the countryside, it looks good, simple but stylish. I had a problem with the bonnet catch not opening a few weeks ago, took it in to Ford who said that it was a common thing, they sprayed it with some special lubricant (personally, i think it was bog standard WD40, but i didn't argue!!), and off i went. The service from Ford has been average, not the luxury service i used to receive from ...

Advantages: Great to Look at. Good to Drive. A Quality Fiat. Disadvantages: It May Well Depreciate More Than Most. Dealers
thorough test drive carried out at the Millbrook Proving Ground as a participant at the Company Car in Action event back in the summer.
Fiat are very keen to promote this particular range into the fleet market, judging by the numbers of Grande Punto's that I am seeing on the roads in the south east of England, it looks as though they have been very successful at doing just that!
COSTS
Fiats have never been expensive to either purchase or to run. With a Co2 level of 154 and an insurance group of 6, bearing in mind this cars performance potential, the standing charges i.e. tax and insurance, are going to be affordable.
According to "What Car" the Fiat Grande Punto Sporting will cost you 38.4p per mile overall to run. By comparison a similarly priced, but less powerful, FordFiesta1.6 TDCi Zetec would cost 33.8p per mile ...
