I have a Mark 2 Fiesta. It is a B plate and that means it is nearly 20 years old. At that age, cars are normally at the scrap yard but my Fiesta Diesel still runs. Ok, the bodywork is not all that clever now and I have had to make some repairs but the car is essentially solid. Common problems with such an old car are as follows:
Parts I have replaced.
Bodywork. 2 new wings. Old ones rusted. They cost about £15 each new and I welded them myself. Painting them cost about £40. New Bonnet. Old one rusted. It cost £5 from the scrap yard and it was the same colour andin good condition. A quick T-cut and it was as good as new. New Battery Tray. It rotted away. These often fail as it is a design flaw. I collects water and rusts through. A new one was £10. 2 new floor pans. Rusted through. Cost about £20 for the lot and recoating. So that is quite cheap for a good condition bodywork that it has today. add to this the Body kit I fitted, it looks like an XR2.
Performance. It does not break any speed records. 80 MPH is about its limit. It is a diesel after all. It does smoke a bit too and the cloud it billows, smells a bit. However, Ford Diesels are famous for breaking down and this one has been very reliable.

Insurance. It is very cheap to insure as it is not a desirable car. It is also low in performance so again this helps the price. An ideal first time driver purchase.

Advantages: Cheap, cheerful, plenty to choose from. Disadvantages: Rusts like crazy. As basic as basic gets.
...In the mid 80's, Ford pioneered the hot hatch category with the XR2, a high specification Fiesta which appealed to the younger driver. A mildly tuned 1.6 8v engine coupled to a closer ratio 5 speed gearbox made for an exciting drive with satisfying low-revs punch missing in many of todays 16v engines. Exterior touches included smoother plastic bumpers, pepperpot alloy wheels previously seen on the Capri 2.8i and mk1 XR2, and most strikingly, a plastic ... ...rudimentary engineering methods used by Ford in the 80's. The main killer is rust. Everywhere. If youre buying check underneath, check the sills, check the boot floor, the strut tops and in particularly the front wings. A lack of splash guards meant all the dirt thrown up by the front wheels goes straight to the top of the wings and rots like mad. Due to a lapse in steel quality at the time, E & F plate cars tend to rust worse, with metallic colours ...

Advantages: Small, Cheap and easy to fix Disadvantages: cheap quality, very old now so will go wrong
The ford fiesta is a good all rounder but you have to make some sacrifices if your used to comfort and reliability. I've never had a problem with any Ford up until 100,000 + miles as for my fiesta.
Being very cheap to buy and look after it was a fantastic starter car, cheap to buy, cheap to run and cheap to fix if you do it yourself. I was quite lucky with my fiesta in that all that went on was the body until I have an accident in it and had to ... ...which improved the handling and made it look slightly better in my opinion.
The biggest problem was rust, rust gets everywhere and really cannot be stopped without replacing body parts. I never had to touch the engine apart from servicing and it was still working fine when I sold it. The only problem I couldn't figure out was that water would get into both the drivers and rear passengers footwell. My sills on both sides went due to rust so to preserve ...

you can pick one of these up now for only a few hundered pounds. They are cheep and cheerfull a basic runabout for town. Loads of them were built and sold so there are absolutley loads of parts all at dead cheep prices compared to other cars. One thing of consequence is that they may not run on unleaded fuel. A conversion should cost no more than about 50 squid but if you buy one with around seventy thousand miles on the clock it should have enough ...
