I have owned my 1986 diamond white XR2, 1600 CVH for 8 years now. I have also owned in that same period a 1.8 Diesel Fiesta, Escort RS1600I & RS Turbo, Ford focus, Ford Cortina Mk1, XR2I (cvh) and driven plenty of other cars such as a Subaru, Audi A8, BMW, Merc ML, Golf IV, 205GTi, 205 rally, Mini Cooper and others.

Ok, so I spent a few quid on new parts. But if I compare the price of a new car to the amount I spent on this pocket rocket then the XR2 then it's worth every penny.
What do you get? Well a second had dog normally. Most have been thrashed to an inch of their life. Oil leaks, worn bushes, warped brake disks, shot suspension, broken plastics, huge dust-bin lid size holes in the door panels for those massive speakers. Missing spot lights, radio cables cuts and repaired by electricians tape and a wet floor.
This is all very minor apart from the wet floor. Most parts can be picked up either on ebay or at a scrappy. Local ads, and the specialist shops all cater for you XR. Parts are plenty so shopping around all becomes part of the fun. The wet floor however is due to the dreaded tin worm. RUST. This I am afraid will need a specialist to repair (unless you just happen to have a welding set in your garage). Out with the old and in with the new.
I enjoyed getting the parts for the old girl and got her looking just like new and added a few modifications such as lowered springs -25mm (no lower) and performance parts such as a race spec cam shaft and air filter.
Petrol is an issue but this is an old car and you can't expect it to out perform modern day motors. The biggest cost is the price of tires. This odd size 185/60/13 doesn't really give you a huge choice but Michelin & Pirelli both offer a good set. Those Koreans also offer cheaper rubbers but not sure about quality. (Falken are worth a look at)!!
When all the work was done, I had a very reliable car. I haven't put a spanner on it for 8 years. Regular oil change as you would with any car, same goes for that cam belt! The XR2 is quick, stable, turns in well. Good comfortable ride on motorways and B - roads. Easy to park. Huge boot space. I carry all sorts of odd things in my car. Ikea boxes fit, as do motorbikes, my BMX, or 4 friends. Its also great for moving house with, just pile them boxes in.
The front passenger has plenty of leg and head room as do those on the rear seat. However, after a 4 hour journey sat in the back the passengers have had enough! Every instrument is easy and functional. All switches and knobs at reach with no frills but very functional. No GPS in here but you do get a vanity mirror and LCD clock. You don't need anything else if you are concentrating on the road.
For a run about the XR2 is fun, quick and reliable. I understand that it still has a boy racer image but that was 20 years ago. I tend to think the SAXO boys have taken over the scene.
There are hundreds of aftermarket parts for this car and most major motor manufacturers cater for these Fords. Join motor clubs around the UK, Europe or the USA. Take it to a RWYB days. Fiesta in the park. Road rally it. Auto-x it. Hill climb in it. Make it into a 180hp turbo if you want. Fit an XR2i engine. Some even went down the V6 road. A monthly Classic Ford magazine can be picked up a you local newsagent giving you tips on how to look after you classic road rocket.

Advantages: Better torque, more flexible & reliable engine (Zetec as opposed to CVH), higher re-sale value, many improvements Disadvantages: Still not quite in the league it should be, overshadowed by very similar RS1800 due to its more tuned engine
...little known that in 1992 Ford re-vamped the XR2i with the 1.8 16v DOHC Zetec engine from the Escort range. Cosmetic changes were very few, but included a set of nicer looking 14" 5 spoke alloys (although these were not standard), abolition of the "tacky" looking blue stripe that surrounded the 1.6, 8v car, body coloured wing mirrors, clear front indicators, "bucket type" sports seats and a different upholstery, and of course the easy way to spot ... ...is not the case! Because Ford used this engine in the RS1800, released about the same time to replace the RS Turbo, they obviously couldn’t let the 2nd from top of range XR2i perform as well. Hence their detuning of the 130bhp engine by way of a restrictive catalytic converter, smaller throttle bodies, smaller manifold and a different ECU chip. This left the poor XR2i with only 105bhp, 5bhp down on the old 8v. However despite this power loss, the ...

Advantages: Great fun, great handling. Disadvantages: Only a 4 speed gearbox.
The original MK1 Fiesta XR2 (1981 to 1983) was a fantastic little car (hot hatch), very 80's. Not the fastest Fiesta around anymore, but great fun to drive, cheap to run and practical enough for everyday use. Never let me down, but could have done with a 5 Speed gearbox for motorway driving, but was a great drive down any small A-Roads.
Great following of the original Fiesta XR2 now...have a look at - www.fiesta-mk1.co.uk
Would love to own another ...

Advantages: This car is cheap quick and extremely reliable. Disadvantages: It is not the most stylish car going, not much street cred.
I was recently given a car for my 18th Birthday, it was Fiesta XR2. It is a personal go-kart; when in the right rev range believe me it shifts. 1st to 2nd shifts you have the ability to wheel spin if driving aggressively, and I exceeded the manufactured estimated speed. It's cheap as to insure, petrol's not bad at around 35mpg - if you drive like a nonce. Performance is pretty good for a mid 90's Fiesta, coming in at around 90bhp and accelerating ...

...I ever had was a dodgy electric window which needed a replacement motor.
Fuel consumption was not bad, especially on longer journeys and the engine basics were easy to maintain. I am not a great Ford Motors fan but this car proved, for me, to be a little beauty. ...

Advantages: Ultra reliable, economical. Disadvantages: Not a sports car but what did you expect?
It's now about 10 months since I replaced my Yaris. I can't really say that I miss it.
That might sound as though I wasn't impressed with the car, wrong!!
I bought my gold coloured Yaris 1 litre GS brand new in October 2000. I was replacing an aging FordFiestaXR2 so the Yaris was a welcome change. Much slower that the Ford but better in almost every other way.
As standard my car came with Tinted, electric windows, power steering, CD player and trip computer. As a special edition created by the dealer it also came with smart alloy wheels and rear spoiler. I was very glad to have these extras as the standard car on steel wheels with plastic trims looks very plain.
Over my 2 years of ownership the car was TOTALLY reliable. Not a thing went wrong with it, nothing fell off and it was completely squeek and rattle free.
Fuel consumtion ...
add I already have 9 points ). But it wasn?t until I drove to Spain that I realized what a monster of car I had bought. Until then I never was able to really feel the power and handling. The Peugeot 306GTI6 is all power reaching speeds of 140mph ? a 2.0 litre engine that handles the road superbly even at speeds of 140mph. No shaking of the steering wheel like many of your has been sports cars (FordfiestaXR2,Ford Escort,Renault Turbo).
If you want class, style, power and looks then the Peugeot 306GTI6 will not fail any of those. Equipped with all the modern accessories this car has it all. The interior is very spacious and although the car may deceive from the outside as being small there is more than enough legroom for 5 passengers. The boot of the car is also a good size ( 4 suitcases could fit in with no problem).
The interior is ...

Advantages: Speed, power, performance, reliability, and grip! Disadvantages: The front lights resemble something a little less sporty!
Fast, comfy and most importantly reliable. Forget about the price at this time. If you missed the fun and raw power of the xr2i then this is the new and improved xr2i, only difference being, this model is better. The Fiesta remarkably resembles a mini ford focus only smaller and more compact. Don?t let this discourage you into thinking this is a wannabe Ford Focus, because its not, it?s a new breed in itself. The car has such great grip on the roads that it seems more a challenge to loose control than retain it. The price ok, not the cheapest and you would have to strongly think this decision over. But if you really know your cars you will come to the safe conclusion that this is Ford, and how many times does Ford let you down. The price therefore speaks for the safety, and reliability that comes with the price tag. ...
