My Focus is now coming up to 3 years old (W reg) and has covered about 17000 miles.
I have had the car from new and replaced a very tired Austin Maestro 1.3.
I tend to keep my cars for a long time, so running costs and reliability are very inportant to me. The car, so far has been very reliable and has given no problems so far.
Most people now know what the Focus looks like, so I wont bore you with the details. Many cars, however, have appeared to have copied it including Ford with its latest Fiesta and Mondeo designs. The only critisism is the rear end; it looks very boring. The new Focus has rubber inserts in the bumper assembly which does help the styling a little.
The car is very quiet and the handling superb. The 1.8 engine is smooth and packs a lot of punch, especially climbing hills. There is very little evidence that the engine is struggling in any way.
There is one thing to note. This is not a DIY car since most of the control is covered by an electronic management system. It is unwise to tamper with this in any way. If a fault occurs, the car goes into "limp home mode" and a special diagnostics tool is required to find the fault. Servicing is strickly limited to checking oil and water levels etc. A Haynes service book is available if you get stuck.
I cannot fault the car; it is easy to drive and very confertable. The air conditioning has a very good use; it not only keeps you cool in the summer, I found that it quickly got rid of mist especially if it is raining hard and your forced to have all the windows closed.
I love the car and will buy another one after this, probably the 2.0 version. Its a pitty that there are so many of them about, must be their popularity!
Since writing this article, there have been reports that owners of this car have had problems with the engine suddenly cutting out. This causes loss of steering and sudden breaking. I must admit that I have not experienced this problem yet and hope I dont.
