Top Speed: 125mph
On average, across all types of driving I'm getting 38-40 mpg so the trips to and from dance school don't hurt so much.
I bought a Panther Black Ford Focus Estate 2.0L Zetec ESP car 11 months ago and consider it to be the best car I have owned even though it cost considerably less than quite a few of my previous cars. Although the Focus may be very common, the 2.0L Zetec ESP is quite rare and as the Focus range is supplied in its 'de-badged' state, a keen eye is required to identify one of these beasts among its lesser siblings. I'll tell you how to spot one later but first, let me tell you why I chose this car.
WHY AN ESTATE? The time had come to replace my Chrysler Voyager but I didn't know what to get. For my work I need an estate car which the Voyager was excellent - you can take out as many of the seats as you require or simply fold them down. For our personal life & major hobby which revolved around taking our daughter with friends & parents to dance festivals around the North West, the Voyager was perfect, it could carry 7 people and all the dance costumes and props in comfort.
However, at the age of 11 our daughter left home to go to dance school and once there, could no longer enter festivals. That meant that we no longer needed 7 seats but still needed an estate for work. What's more, the 360 mile round trip to the dance school soon began to show its toll on the Voyager's petrol consumption - I wanted something more economical. So I looked at all the available estate cars, just looking at 2.0L models because I still wanted the car to have power but it needed to be tax efficient. Finally I plumped for the Focus because it not only fulfilled my requirements and had all the extras that I could want but it also felt right.
2.0L GHIA vs 2.0L ZETEC ESP The 2.0L Focus Estate is available in the Ghia or Zetec ESP versions. In a nutshell, the Ghia concentrates on 'luxury & comfort' in that it has an on-board computer for fuel consumption, a CD stacker unit, electric windows at front and rear, variable intermittent windscreen wiper speed whereas the Zetec ESP concentrates on 'sportiness & safety'. The ESP model has only a single CD unit , front electric windows only and only a single intermittent windscreen wiper speed. But it has larger, low profile alloy wheels, firmer road suspension giving it a more 'sporty' feel, traction control and most importantly, the ESP system. Although I'm a careful driver, the ESP system has saved me twice so far, once on ice and secondly on hitting loose gravel on a bend. For those not familiar with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) if you lose control because you hit ice or simply by taking a bend too quickly, an orange light comes on telling you that the ESP computer system has just taken over the control of your car and once it's safe again, control is passed back to the driver. I can assure you that when that orange light goes out, you are pleased you had bought it!
COST The estate version within the Focus range costs an extra £500 and at the time of purchase, the on the road price for the 2.0L Estate Zetec ESP was £15,500. However, by looking around and negotiating, I got the price down to £14,560. Unfortunately, negotiation on price is limited on the ESP version because there are so few available whereas I believe it is possible to get very nice discounts on the other models within the Focus range.
OVERALL SPEC What do you get for this money? Quite an impressive array of features in my mind: - Two Front Air Bags - ABS Brakes - Disk brakes on all 4 wheels - Traction Control System - Electronic Stability Program (ESP) - 16" Alloy Wheels - Front & Rear Fog Lights - Digital Clock - Heated Front & Rear Windscreens - Air Conditioning - Adjustable Steering Wheel - CD/Radio with Remote Control on Steering Wheel - Electrically Operated & Heated Door Mirrors - Bonnet Locked by Ignition Key - Central Locking & Immobiliser
MAINTENANCE & RUNNING COSTS The Focus requires to be serviced every 12,500 miles and my first 12,500 service at my local Ford dealer came to £79.03 including VAT - this is a joke compared to the Voyager service bills! The Insurance Group is 8 and therefore could be expensive for a young driver.
PERFORMANCE 0-60mph: 9.6 seconds Top Speed: 125mph On average, across all types of driving I'm getting 38-40 mpg so the trips to and from dance school don't hurt so much.
HANDLEABILITY For a truly spacious estate car, this model is fast, powerful and very responsive. On bends it feels as though the car is glued to the road and it has a braking system to match its powerful performance. With the Traction Control and the ESP you can feel totally safe.
HOW TO SPOT THE ESP Because the Focus range is 'de-badged' i.e. there's no sign of the car engine size so you can't tell whether the car is a 1.4L, 1.6L, 1.8L or 2.0L, you need extra sensory perception to spot an ESP model! At the time of purchase, the only colours available for the ESP were Silver and Panther Black, so if you saw any other colour , you knew it couldn't be an ESP. If the car were Silver or Panther Black, then you've got to look at the wheels. The ESP wheels are larger and do not have a 'lip' on the outer edge of the alloy wheel - so you do need ESP after all!
BAD POINTS If I'm really nit-picking, then I can only give 2 bad comments:
- the driver's seat seems to be at a very slight angle which means that over a long drive, it is more comfortable to drive with one hand on the steering wheel - something we all know we shouldn't do. This fault might apply only to my car, I've not asked others if they have experienced this effect.
- on odd occasions, I have problems in selecting 3rd & 5th gear i.e. they are so close that I mix them up. Now this could well be due to my sloppy driving and I half expect it is!
Advantages: handling, extras Disadvantages: now re-modeled - value may fall
The Ford Focus continues to be one of the most enjoyable cars in its price range. It's fun to drive, with brisk acceleration performance and agile handling. It's versatile, with hatchback models with flip-down seats that quickly prepare it for large amounts of cargo. It's comfortable on long trips and stable at high speeds.
Ford's New Edge styling has helped the Focus stand out from the crowd. It comes in a wide variety of body styles to meet many ... ...that out!!!)
2003 Model Ford Focus
Ford Focus comes in four distinct body styles: three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback, four-door, and five-door wagon. All offer similar driving characteristics.
Three engines are available. All are 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. The 110-hp 2.0-liter engine with a single overhead-cam and two valves per cylinder is standard on Focus LX and SE models. It's mated to a five-speed manual transaxle.

Advantages: Great driving, reliable car Disadvantages: Ford service department
I bought my Ford Focus in June 2006, second hand from Ford with 38,000 miles on the clock. The model I own is a 2.0 ESP facelift, with the revised headlights which include the indicator, revised bumpers with bump strips & revised metal flush skirts.
Now, in August 2007 the car is on the brink of hitting 70,000 miles and it literally hasn't missed a beat. The only parts that I have had to replace that are none wear and tear are the thermorstat housing ... ...nothing else in it's class at the same power I would swap it for. It is a great drive, reliable, good on fuel, insurance and the staff at Ford have been more than helpful over the time which I have owned this and my previous Focus. Can't reccomend highly enough! ...

...my father was given a Ford Focus 2.0L Ghia I must say I really enjoyed driving it when I was on the insurance, just for the sheer power and ability to accelerate at traffic lights. The car belonged to an electrical company(they paid my insurance for the car) but when my father retired he was offered the car and sadly for me, my insurance was far too expensive for the car :-(.
The car itself has Air Conditioning which does a good job of keeping you ... ...has got Alloy wheels and Ford has designed a kind of key which is for security. You will be given one when you purchase the car, this prevents other people removing the wheels of the vehicle without your consent.
Another feature I forgot to mention was to open the bonnet to access the engine there is a key required, the keyhole itself is hidden behind the Ford badge which swivels around to reveal the slot.
The Acceleration in the car is very good, ...

In 2002 Ford released a sportier derivative of the Zetec model, the ST170. Designed in conjunction with the Rally Sport (RS) project the ST (sports team) was looking at developing a more rally-derived version of the popular hatchback for a consumer level. The 170 is comprised of the Duratec ST engine, which was developed from the 2.0 Zetec DOHC 16v engine used in the higher end Zetec and Ghia models. As the gears get higher they get longer, fourth is useless unless under hard acceleration and under normal driving I often bypass it going straight to fifth or sixth depending on speed. Third ...

I have always loved Ford Escorts and tended to go for the mid-range sporty machines - a very Zen-like, middle-of-the-road attitude - (1.6 early types, and later the XR3i and finally the 1.8 si). I would probably still be driving one now if Ford hadn't replaced it with the Focus. As far as I was concerned, if it aint broke, don't fix it so I was a little timid when it came to this new model. "Haven't you got any Escorts?" I asked the saleman.
He ... ...a 2 litre. The older Ford 2 litres had always proved to be somewhat thirsty. The Focus had an on-board computer that was showing a cruising consumption of 40+ to the gallon on the test drive and if I wanted performance - boy was it quick! I was convinced. This was no Escort - in comparison it was motoring luxury. Ford had really got it together with this quirky looking motor. After the test drive, I had fallen in love with it - I just had to buy ...

Advantages: Loads of Bootspace, Practicality, Performance Disadvantages: Dealers, Consumption
My first C-Max was a 1.6 TDCi, and I have to say that it was a disappointment. The specification of the car is practically the same as the 2.0 litre TDCi apart from the six-speed gearbox, but the performance left a lot to be desired; the 1.6 was slow and sluggish with too much 'lag' so I was pleased to get the 2.0 litre a week or so later. What a difference this car proved to be!
The specification includes power assisted steering, electric windows (though only at the front) Single CD player, Anti Lock Brakes, Twin Airbags, Heated Front Screen (An absolute MUST) Air Conditioning, Electric mirrors, Remote ICE controls, Alloy Wheels, Cup Holders, Aircraft style trays, Rear floor storage, Sunglasses holder, Remote controlled central locking, Alarm, Three rear inertia seatbelts, and of the course the optional furry dice!

Advantages: Balance of performance/running costs, handling, looks Disadvantages: Not as fast as rivals, some niggles on early cars
Ford were somewhat slow off the mark to introduce a performance model into the Focus range after its launch. In fact, it was nearly four years into its life when the ST170 arrived in 2002.
Based on the American Focus SVT, the ST170 comes with a 168bhp 2.0 engine and six-speed Getrag gearbox. In true fast Ford style, it also features 17" alloy wheels, larger bumpers and subtle extra fittings inside. It was enough to make me buy one new in 2003.
And over the year I run it, the ST was a enjoyable car to own. Once the engine had run in, and the gearbox - which was so tight from new was almost unusable for 500 miles - I found the performance to be more than enough for daily use. There are faster rivals, and whilst the 2.0 engine never felt like it was delivering all 168 horses, it was certainly enough to make me confident in all driving ...
Advantages: Smooth, Quiet, Economical, Packed with features Disadvantages: Ford Service Department
. The 2.0 TDCI has a 6 speed gearbox which gives you a true overdrive gear unlike the 1.8 which only has a 5 speed box.
On the down side with this, and any other Ford, the service from ford leaves a little to be desired but for a trouble free car like this that is not a problem as you will not see the Ford dealer often after the purchase.
If you do have to take your car in for work at Ford, keep on their backs as this seems to push them into working a little quicker. If only to get rid of you. ...
