I bought my Ford Focus in June 2006, second hand from Ford with 38,000 miles on the clock. The model I own is a 2.0 ESP facelift, with the revised headlights which include the indicator, revised bumpers with bump strips & revised metal flush skirts.
Now, in August 2007 the car is on the brink of hitting 70,000 miles and it literally hasn't missed a beat. The only parts that I have had to replace that are none wear and tear are the thermorstat housing seal (Ford however will try and charge you to replace the whole housing, where infact it is invariably just the rubber seal which perishes), and a n/s/f ball joint due to excessive play when being tested for an MOT, a grand total of about £50 non-expected maintenance. Not bad at all for 30,000 miles of motoring in just over a year. And as a furthur point of note, the Michelin PilotPremacy tyres which were on the car when I bought it lasted over 20,000 miles before they were replaced with Toyo Proxes. The starter motor also fires back occasionally, but always starts and I don't see the need in replacing it just yet.
Routine maintenance to the car has involved new disks and pads all round, new Tyres all round, filter changes and oil changed every 10,000 miles or less.
The bad points about this car... Personally I find the ESP/TC to be too intrusive. If you have been on any kind of driving course or have the experience to deal with skids/understeer/oversteer it can become a man vs machine rather than machine helping man, notably in the wet. The sump is also starting to rust and corrode and will need replacing soon (Ford will charge you an arm and a leg but it can be done a lot cheaper a small local garage, or even by yourself if you are handy with a spanner and a socket set). And that's about all I can pick fault with it!
The good points... The handling is amazing. The looks are way ahead of its time and far outshine the Mk2 in my opinion. For a 2l the economy is great. I rarely see less than 350 miles before the fuel light comes on. The standard stereo components are excellent quality. The insurance group is low. The seats are supportive. The driving position is great, and adjusts to all needs. The boot is more than ample, as is the rear legroom even with the front seats all the way back. The revised centre console holds most beverages with ease. The footwell lighting is really good in the dark.
I owned a 1.6 pre-facelift Focus prior to this and was impressed by it, but this takes it to the next level. I have driven a lot of cars and this is by far my favourite. There is nothing else in it's class at the same power I would swap it for. It is a great drive, reliable, good on fuel, insurance and the staff at Ford have been more than helpful over the time which I have owned this and my previous Focus. Can't reccomend highly enough!
