Advantages: Amazing car with superb handling and very comfortable and practical Disadvantages: The 1.6 TDCI isn't quite a performer and the economy is poor for a diesel!!

Following on from the success of their class leading small family hatchback, Ford decided to have a dabble in the compact MPV market using the Focus as a test bed. The new FocusC-Max was released in 2003 and was a preview of how the Focus hatchback replacement was heading to look.
The C-Max itself is a handsome car for a bulky MPV and to be honest since their release I have been rather fond of them. The styling bought the car in line with the forever being revised Mondeo and also hinted on what Ford had in mind for the new Focus. With a new model came new engines, shunning away with Fords old 1.8 diesel engine Ford opted for the use of the PSAs 1.6 and 2.0 diesel units (the 2 ...
Advantages: Good mpg, loads of space, great driving position Disadvantages: Look a bit plain, a little boring!
My previous car was a 1.8TDCI 'standard' Focus. It was a great car. I had it for 3 years and it was completely reliable, I didn't have a single problem with it. It was however, a 3 door Zetec model and with the arrival of our daughter, it wasn't quite practical enough?. I needed something with a bit more boot space and 4 doors. So, after looking at various other options, I ended up with a C-max1.6TDCI Zetec. So what's the verdict??..
Well, it isn't quite as fast as my previous car, but it's still a reasonably competent engine and it doesn't feel underpowered. Once more, I have found I'm getting significantly more mpg that the old car. I'm currently averaging 46mpg on my journey to work whereas I used to struggle to get above 40.
Inside, there's a more pleasing dash than before, I think generally the finishes are higher quality ...
Advantages: Space, drive quality, economy Disadvantages: The Ford Focus.
and tumble to allow for excellent boot space and also slide back and across to create extra leg room for 2 rear passengers. Fab. Not hard to use, either (although not exactly slick).
I went for the1.6TDCi spec because of the stated fuel economy - about 57 mpg combined. Whew! That beats even the 1.6TDCiFocus (at about 53 mpg). Is it true?
No. But it's not so far from the truth that it makes me want to weep. I live in Cornwall and drive up and down hills and windy roads as often as I do A-roads and motorways, and I regularly achieve an economy of about 49 mpg - but then, I am a careful driver and rarely rev the engine over about 2500 rpm. If you only use half revs (max is about 4500), then you can improve economy by about 50% compared to when thrashing it.
There are a few minor problems - the clock being quite irritating as it ...
