I am a loyal Ford Owner and my fella currently has a Ford Focus ST170 03 reg and as I am now insured I feel I can comment on the perfomance of this car and wow what a performance it gives.
The Ford Focus ST170 can be easily distinguished from the standard Ford Focus with 17" alloy wheels, colour co-ordinated bumpers and bodyside mouldings, Xenon headlights that incorporate the indicator, a unique feature offered on the ST170 model.
There is a high level rear mounted tailgate spoiler to the car with integrated brake light and rear washer jet.
70mm
exhaust with muffler and chrome finish again makes the ST stand out from the standard Focus.
The ST is available in 4 colours, Magnum Grey, Moondust Silver, Capri Blue and Panther Black with sports style front bucket seats in a unique part leather interior and blue waffle trim in the centre of the seats. Offering height adjustment and lumbar support. Mark's car is in Moodust Silver so it is prone to the odd stone chip marking the paintwork as most cars are. the seats are comfy and when you are driving they really give you the feel of driving a sports car.
The engine is 2.0i 16v duratec ST petrol engine with 170 bhp (brake horse power) with Variable Valve Timing technology allowing the car to rev over 7,300 rpm with ease. The engine is so obviusly powerful (0-62 in 8.2seconds )and could overtake anything on a steep hill, one thing I noticed whilst driving the car is how stiff the clutch is, I put this down to me being female and the fact that my clutch is nothing special on my car but all the same I have yet to come across a car with a clutch as stiff as this. This car does literally drink petrol, to fill the tank costs around average of £46.00 and that has to get filled up once a week sometimes more depending on the length of journeys, the car only starts to slow on the fuel consumption when you are driving it at faster speeds something which you cannot really do in some areas.
This sports tuning on this car is only really noticeable by the driver as it grips the road, with low friction steering and the sports front and rear blade controlled suspension. I am yet to put this car to the test partly because I don't own it and if anything goes wrong I will be in serious trouble. However I have been a bit of a girl racer with the wheel spins which in turn led the traction control to switch on oopppss!
The 6 speed gear box again is noticeably stiff but you would come to expect this with it being sports tuned. All the gears are close together so it is easy to drop from 6th gear into 3rd gear leading to high rev's, if you are not used to it. The reverse gear is another one you have to really push the gears to the left until you hear a big clunk then push forward into first gear, this has made me worry that when I want to reverse I hit 1st gear straight into my car parked in front on the driveway!!
The ST comes complete with ESP this is known more commonly as Electronic Stability programme which as ford informs me senses when the car is drifting off line and automatically adjusts the engine power and brakes ti help maintain traction and stability through corners. This car literally grips the road and can take bends at 60mph comfortably, however I would not recommend doing this as the car offers fantastic steering and suspension throughout your journey, indeed making it a pleasure to drive.
The average fuel consumption is noted at 12.4litres per 100km to me this car literally drinks petrol with its beefy engine and am quite happy to stick with my little 1.25i!!.
Inside the car, again it continues to impress with silver faced instruments such as the gear knob and door handles. White instrument dials, with electro luminescent gauges. Aluminium racing style pedals. CFC free Air Conditioning as standard and is extremely powerful, and comes in useful during the hot weather we are currently experiencing. Electric windows with 1 shot lowering on the drivers side and passenger electric windows, the rear windows on the 3 door model cannot be opened. Electronically operated and heated door mirrors. 6 disc cd changer complete with stereo radio complete with mounted controls and driver remote controls and 4 powerful speakers.
The car comes with Thatcham Category 1 alarm with interior scan and perimeter alarm fitted as standard on the ST, remote deadlocking is also an added security feature on this model.
This car is not for the bad driver with it being in the high insurance group of 17A.
This car is the Ford of all Fords and if only I could get a drive in the Focus RS I think this car tops them all!!!
