We purchased a 2nd hand 2005 Ford Galaxy TDI from a used car supermarket. In comparison to other models of this class, the Galaxy is head and shoulders above the rest. Why did we chose the Galaxy?
Well, put simply - you get a lot more for your money. Yes the other rivals like Zafira and Sharan are also 7 seaters, a little bit cheaper and so on but in my opinion you get what you pay for - and the Galaxy is perfect proof of this.
Practically speaking - there are no close rivals. The 7 seat arrangement, is not simply 'just' 7 seats. They are seats of an equal build quality to all other seats in the cabin, not glorified flatback deck chairs that leave your rearmost passengers sitting on the floor with their knees tucked up under their chin. The back is just as comfortable for adults than the front.
A big factor everyone should pay attention to with regards this car is USEABILITY. There is no shortage of space, be it with the arrangement of seats or all the nooks and crannies of space for all those little things like keys, in car chargers and travel games. The front alone has a glove box, 2 top dashboard compartments, an overhead sunglasses compartment and storage (including covered storage) in the doors.
If you've got kids with those electronic games that all need charging at the same time, this is possible with no less than 3 12v cigar lighter outlets available (front, middle, rear on our Version) those these may be an optional extra on some models.
The seats have built in lumbar support, and are all equally as comfortable, whilst legroom and headroom for someone pushing 6ft tall is just as good in every position.
As far as drivability goes, there is very little difference between this car fully loaded, and a Ford Mondeo 2.0 which we had previously. The turbo injection combined with the 6 gears gives you power when you need it, without a struggle, and there always feels like there's a lot more to give should you need it.
The onboard computer (while strikingly similar to the VW Sharan) breaks down trips into MPG, average speed and time on the road.... you choose what you want to see. The self-diagnostic features (rear break lights and fluid levels) are also handy... and displayed on starting the ignition if a fault presents itself.
Controls are easy, handling is good and dimensions are quick to get used to, aided by the slightly higher driving position for all-round visability. You also FEEL safe because everywhere you look - there are airbags. In door curtains, front seats and side impact.
It might be early days for us, but with an average 43 Miles to the Gallon, increasing to 56/60 on long distance I think this car will be a great servant to us for many years to come..... obviously I will update this review if my opinion changes, but at the moment this is quite simply a superb practical family car I would certainly recommend to anyone who wasn't sure what to go for.
Just as an update, we've put it through it's paces this weekend as I landscape the Garden.... we fitted 4 kids 2 adults 6 bags of bark chippings 5 bags of ASDA shopping and 3 rolls of weed control sheeting plus 2 travel blankets and a large box of crisps!
Everyone was seated comfortably, there were no performance issues and all fitted with just one of the rearmost seats folded flat not removed.
Advantages: takes all the family, better on diesel, turbo very nippy, good safety features Disadvantages: no boot space and big door knobs!
...going into details of Henry Ford and how he earn't all his millions. I'm also not going into detail of all the mechanics of the vehicle. I haven't a clue how to change an oil filter or what the ins and outs of a breaking system should be . I'm just going to review my new baby, my silver Tdi, manual gear box 2005 model and get down to the nitty gritty of what makes this car so good for mums and kids. Sorry lads no techie stuff here, I'll leave that ... ...The carpets are black and Ford never gave us floor mats so buy your own if you're purchasing from a "tight" dealership. Floor mats are a must if you want to try and keep that new feel as long as possible. YOUR CONTROLS
The controls are excellent, easy to reach. Nothing too complicated, its been made for those who just want to drive a car not programme a computer. If you want Satellite Navigation that's an additional extra, we were quoted £2,500 ...

...only take it to a ford garage as they are the only ones with a diagnostics machine for ford, it costs £88 just to hook it up to that then extras for what ever wants fixing, so it can be expensive to fix, but its the same with any ford i think.
It also has space for a fridge in the back if you only have 6 seats in, there is a cigarette lighter in the back which we have put a inveter on, (that sorts the voltage out,) then we can put any electrics ... ...in ours as well, it is fixed to the roof so when we go on long journeys the kids can take the playstation as well, weve got a portable dvd as well, so everyones happy.
I find it very comfortable and spacious. My children often fall asleep in it so it must be ok.
The tyres are 17ich i think and i always have troulbe getting reconditioned ones for it, but i f you can afford new then you'll have no probs!
It has twin airbags so thats a bonus.

Advantages: Space, Family comfort, Reliability Disadvantages: Seating configeration
I've owned a Galaxy 1.9tdi (130ps) for 18 months now. The car is a 'fully loaded' Ghia with every extra such as Multimedia, Satalite Navigation, Leather etc.
The plus points? Well there can be no doubt that these easily outweigh the negative ones. Fuel economy, comfort, reliability, specification and overall practicality are excellent. I usually get around 40mpg on motorway driving. All the family like the comfort and drive of the car, the kids ... ...problems with starting or reliability of any kind and it wants for nothing on spec and gadgets(with the exception mentioned below) although these come at a cost.
The downsides? Only 2 really. Firstly, because the car has Sat Nav, dealers have yet to come up with a way of offering a CD player! Apparently there is a 6disc stacker option for about £450 but the 'multiplex' wiring makes this impossible to fit by any dealer i have asked. Secondly, the ...

Advantages: 7 Seats Disadvantages: When you buy one of these, your sports car days are definitely over.
Note: I hear that the Galaxy is being replaced by the "new Galaxy" in January 2006. By the time your reading reviews on this car, then your days of owning a sports car are probably over.
Im on my second Galaxy 1.9 D now, I wouldnt have bought another one if I did'nt like em.
The 7 seats are perfect for when youve got family or friends and all want to go out together in the same car (but you do end up being everybodys taxi and airport runner). The ... ...so we keep the seats in all the time and fold them up if weve got lots of luggage ( the boot space is limited when all seats are down)
I have the Ghia model and the best feature is the parking sensors (front and rear) its a big car and I find these essential.
I compared many other cars before I bought this one and although others were cheaper this had the best quality interior. And the thing about Fords is that there's always a garage nearby.

of waffle and him pretending to be our new best friend for as long as his sale pitch lasted.
We were shown the GalaxyTdi at the back of the forecourt in Midnight Silver, which was brand spanking new. Both hubby and I agreed this was what we wanted after looking at the inside and playing with some of the dials and returned to the office to make our order. We couldn't take this one so had to wait two weeks for a similar model to be delivered. A deposit was required of £1,000 to secure the cars order.
On first appearances I could see the car has changed over the years, the bodywork is sleek and streamlined, no longer resembling a bus but an elegant family car. The headlights looked larger on this model, totally revamped but however looked complicated to change and that's before I lifted the bonnet catch. Fords have since added a break ...
