I just lost the security pin after having my battery removed. Ford’s wanted £90 to re-programme it so I declined on their offer and bought a new Kenwood from Hal fords with a cd. It cost me £150 and that included installation. Believe me it sounds wicked with all the 8 speakers pounding.
I have owned my Galaxy since 1999 when it was bought brand new. That was such a great feeling, I was actually buzzing in the forecourt of Dagenham Motors. I’ve never been able to afford brand news cars, always going for the second hand market. We blew all our savings on this but it was worth it, I was in love!
I was due to have my son within days and my husband was reluctant to buy a new car so close to becoming parents again. He always has his sensible head on but I the impulsive one, convinced him to part with our long saved nest egg and get this MPV.
The car was a dream to drive, even though it was a bit constricting across my bump, I knew I wouldn’t be pregnant much longer so we bought it. Just in time to bring my baby boy home from Hillingdon Hospital two days later.
My Galaxy has depreciated naturally and a low mileage 2 litre will set you back about £6,000 today. I paid £19,000 for this originally. Ouch. Never the less we have had our money’s worth and three children later; it is still carrying us about like a loyal donkey.
Here’s a virtual tour of my fourth baby:
The car is central locking but that’s it, you cannot open the doors via your keypad like the newer models. Once you turn the key, it deactivates the alarm and immobiliser. The one installed is a standard Ford one, nothing special but it does the job.

The cloth seats are a nightmare to keep clean, what ever made me buy this colour I do not know! However the seats are very comfy and there is excellent lumbar support. The car is fitted with airbags and this is clearly written on the front of the dashboard.
There are two leavers on all seven seats inside. One to recline and one to raise the seat up and down. Whatever you do don’t show the kids how to this do, my boys think they are an injector seat. My Galaxy is a very comfortable car to drive and being in such a high position makes you feel more secure on the road. The power steering makes it even more of a breeze.
The dashboard is not very complicated compared to the newer model Galaxy I viewed outside the school the other day. The controls are easy to reach and easy to read. On the left of the drivers seat are all the heat controls, the vents, various cubbyholes and two-cup holders.
When driving at night the dashboard light is altered to your own personal taste via a small wheel on the left of the wheel. I have it on full, which gives the car a comforting green glow.
The stereo is situated directly above the gear stick. I replaced the original Ford one with a Kenwood. Not that there was anything wrong with the Ford stereo mind you. I just lost the security pin after having my battery removed. Ford’s wanted £90 to re-programme it so I declined on their offer and bought a new Kenwood from Hal fords with a cd. It cost me £150 and that included installation. Believe me it sounds wicked with all the 8 speakers pounding.
The indicator stick is a short thick stump, this also controls the main beam. This is on the left f the steering wheel. It’s easy to flick on, no problems there. The lights are on the right hand side of the steering column and are operated via a switch. Headlights are powerful and as you sit in the car and turn them on, they adjust to the weight of the car and passengers. Pretty good eh.
The wipers are boxed standard and are on the left hand side of the wheel. You get three speeds and intermittent. The rear wipers are operated from this lever too by flicking the lever backwards. From the same lever you control the washers.
The electric windows are opened and closed from the drivers side. The panel is built inside the door by the exit handle. The passenger side operates their own window only. The rear windows are handle only.
In the middle of the car is a separate heater control for the rear seats. It’s a very powerful fan and be advised not to have it on full. Infact the heating is faultless, the car warms up in seconds and de-mists just as quick. There are also bum warmers, but this is also too warm after a while. I distinctevly feel menopausal when this kicks in.
However, once inside you will see one major gripe is the total lack of boot space. I have to remove one of the seven seats just to get the pram in. There is also a lack of good-sized cubbyholes in this model, something I find invaluable. There is only one I would say is adequate and that’s in the boot. Of course there are sections behind the front seats for maps but nothing to get excited about.
Plenty of cup holders mind you, which are totally useless to me. The kids have snapped the heads off them anyway climbing over the seats, as they do .......
The heating unit is quite powerful, don’t have it on setting four, otherwise it could blow your hair off. The rear seats in the boot have a separate heating unit, which you control from the panel at the passenger side in the middle. Don’t ask me why its there, I'm just as confused. It's a pain having to climb out the car just to warm the back seats up. Bit of bad design there, should be controlled from the front but heh hoh, its not.
All eight seats are removable or fold down and this makes the car a van. Great for transporting large items such as matresses or going to the recyclying centre. The passenger seats have folded down tables, great for picnics, except I dont let the kids eat in my car!
That’s the inside of my car covered.
As for safety, I know it has a steel rim around the doors but the doors do seem a bit weak and easily dentable. There are many small dents from other cars hitting me in the car park. The newer one appears to have more strength in its frame compared to the P reg model.
Other than a few small gripes, its not too major on the pocket when it comes to servicing, a good reliable car. I still take my car to Dagenham Motors and before anyone tells me off, I know I am paying well over the odds for this type of service.
The reason why I prefer to use a Ford main dealership is that I have encountered to many cowboy mechanics in the past, that even though they charge you less, never do a good a job anyway. I would find the timing was still out or the oil was no different as to when it went in.
With my local dealership I pay between £250 and £400 once a year, depending on what it needs. I can guarantee they will find any small safety fault and the car will drive like a dream for a further 12 months. I have my faith in them.
As for petrol, it takes about £60 to fill her up on unleaded but this will last, the Galaxy does not seem to drink a lot of fuel, water or oil.
I will be looking at the newer model soon, just hoping there is more boot space than before. If your are contemplating a second hand MPV, I would recommend a Ford Galaxy. My 2 litre model has served us well, I have no regrets.
The Ford Galaxy is a people carrier that looks remarkably like the VW Sharran and the Seat people carrier, this is for a very good reason, as they are the same vehicle, with different badges and different (but very similar) specifications.
The model I drive is the 2.0 basic petrol model. The seating can be arranged in many different ways around the two in rear, three in middle and two up front formation. The rear seats are designed very much for ... ...a half feet will start to feel cramped. The middle row have reasonably good legroom and good visibility, there are also little fold-up tables and pockets for magazines etc. The front seats are positively luxurious, with plenty of legroom, fully adjustable seats, armrests, and even FOUR, yes count them, FOUR cup holders.
Looks are good inside and out, although I challenge the average person to wash the roof effectively. It is quite high off the ground, ...

We got a 2 litre petrol white seven seater at 5 years old for £4000 with full warranty - i remember being pleased at the time.

We wanted a car which carried 7 people in relative comfort as I was a childminder and needed to ship kids to and from playgroups, schools etc.
We shopped around and found that the Galaxy was the cheapest of the 'good' ones and the petrol model being significantly cheaper than the diesel equivalent.
We have the S reg model and on the whole we are very please with it. It came with 110000 miles on the clock but is still hapilly motoring 4 years later ... ...Britain and France in it and it has never mechanically let us down.
We had a problem with the cental locking on the passenger door which cost £110 to fix (the lock just would not work) had this fixed 2 years ago and had no problems since.
The fact that it is a petrol model isn't a big problem either, for the size and weight of the vehicle it is very reasonable on petrol consumption and certainly doesn't prohibit its use. It motors well at speed ...

Advantages: large spacious flexible vehicle Disadvantages: limited boot space, electrical problems expensive especially through main dealer
Large family seven seats is essential. Removable seating adds flexibility. Most car like MPV I've driven. Performance is reasonable 30+mpg driven sensibly. Cruises on motorway. Parts and servicing are cheap unless it's specialist electrical. Has been very reliable over last 5 years. Downside is limited boot space when fully laden. Central locking can jam and keys stick if automatic window closing function is over used. V-belt adjuster can fail if ...

Advantages: Comfortable, large Disadvantages: Can be difficult to drive because of size
I have this car and have done for a couple of years now. It is an extremely large and comfortable MPV. The seats in the boot have adequate space for legs and the seats are very comfortable, because they are wide so you have a lot of room and are not cramped against other people while traveling. We were thinking of selling it but decided not to because it is so good. It has all the features we need and has so much room compared to other cars. The ... ...the battery. It picks up the IOW radio when i do not live there. There are many useful places to place valuables which are very useful, with many pockets which leaves the car less cluttered.. Even with the seats in the back there is still enough boot space but we take the seats out quite often which is an easy job. All you have to do is pull 2 levers to lift the seats up to increase boot space and to take them out just involves pulling another lever. ...

Advantages: Space, looks, equipment, comfort, nice to drive, fuel consumption Disadvantages: Oddment space close to driver, parking brake
There comes a time in your life when you need more space, squeezing everyone in to your favourite little car is no longer practical & you have to think about a larger car.
The multi purpose vehicle (MPV for short) is ideal family carriers but their box shaped looks don?t win a lot of admirers. Ford put a lot of thought into this problem & a couple of years ago introduced two new MPVs that are based on each other. One was the S-Max, a stylish MPV with a sloping roof & sporty features but it still carried all the space a modern family is likely to want. The other was the Galaxy, a more boxed shaped MPV with a higher roof, seven seats, more space & it shared the majority of the components to the S-Max.

Advantages: Spacious, practical, relatively cheap to run Disadvantages: Uncomfortable seats, noisy diesel engine, turbo lag
I liked our last FordGalaxy. It had a lovely 2.8 litre V6 petrol engine which was smooth, powerful and sounded great, although the average fuel consumption of about 24mpg wasn?t a plus point. Unfortunately, once it had covered 80,000 miles it seemed to embark on a programme of self-destruction. It never ground to a complete halt but developed several faults in fairly quick succession, culminating in the death of the air conditioning part of the climate control system. The Galaxy is like a mobile greenhouse and really needs air conditioning, so as a new unit would have cost almost as much as the car was worth my wife and I reluctantly felt the time had come to change it.
Being the owners of three fast-growing daughters, two dogs and a Big Luggage habit whenever we go away, we decided to get another people carrier. We narrowed ...
Advantages: Friendly staff and a great warranty Disadvantages: sometimes hard to get there (if the car has broken down)
I fell pregnant last year and with 3 kids already we needed a new car as the tin can we had made us all feel like sardines.
We did the usual of trailing round all the garages (like you do) trying to find a car that was suitable for us and at the right price.
We knew we needed an mpv (it was either that or a mini bus)so we donned our walking shoes and off we trecked with ankle biters in tow.
It was a complete nightmare looking at all the garages and not knowing if we were going to get a good deal or be ripped off.
We came home quite dejected and we decided to look on the web to see what write ups the cars had so this could make our choice a bit easier.
The best one that came out was the FordGalaxy2.0 petrol for us.
As this was a ford we knew there was only one place to go and that was the Ford dealership.
We didnt want a new one ...
