A van for the boy racer

Advantages: Loads of extras; well built; powerful engine
Disadvantages: It ain't a Lotus M250

Firstly a profile of myself: 34-year-old married man with three kids, 5 and under. Take frequent holidays both in the UK and abroad. Shop at least once a week. Like speed and danger provided I’m the only person in the car. Have driven numerous cars from a clapped-out Metro 1.3 to ...
...I love driving and the further I can go the better, generally covering about 15,000 miles a year, of which 10,000 is pleasure. The fastest I’ve ever driven is 136mph at 6am along a deserted dual carriageway. I have three points on my license for running a red light (‘twas an accident honest!). I drive at 30mph in 30mph zones; 40mph in 40mph zones; 70mph in 50mph zones and 99mph everywhere else.

I need a car that fits various ... more

My experience after driving it for 8 years

Advantages: Great for carrying anything just remove the seats.
Disadvantages: heavy on petrol and insurance.

It was top of the range at the time I bought it. It is great for going out on picnics taking family and friends in one vehicle although it lacks storage space, you can still fit a lot in. I have used it on several occasions to carry heavy items as you can remove all seats except for the front seats and you can use it as a van. I must say it has been quite handy in that respect. It is heavy on petrol especially during the extra cold periods of weather ...
...up. I find summer is slightly better as there is no need to warm the car before driving. I have not had any major problems with it except tyre changing and breaks as mine is automatic. other than that very reliable and still is. Airconditioning is great and with the extra cd player makes it fun. I sometimes find removing seats and puting them back quite a heavy task as you have to remove the seats from the car and find somewhere to store them which ...

family car with extra

Advantages: number of chairs,
Disadvantages: price space in rear

The galaxy is a fine car for transporting large families about and the extar chairs come in usefull. The Engine is beautiful smooth strong and powerful, its been ticking over nicely now for about 30,000 miles and keeps purring well. The trim levels are good with usual ghia refinements, The climate control has had a few problems and is the worst aspect of the car. The galaxy when equipped with all seats in it leaves little room for storage space ...

Lovely car but just a bit juicy

Advantages: comfort and size
Disadvantages: Juicy on Petrol

In my view this has been a great car and I have enjoyed many reliable journeys, but I have found the Galaxy has been juicy on petrol., as you would expect with 2.8 I have found the Galaxy very specious even with three children, cots, buggies and bags. Saying that the boot is not huge but enough for your luggage. I have found this car very quick to pull away and is quite enjoyable for such a big car. I think this has definately been the best family ...
...any growing family. I think this car comes with lots of little comforts for a big family and I love all of its many features, swival seats, air con, heated seats etc. I think the car feels very safe to drive although road handling is only medium - satisfactory. To me the car looks ok, just very plain but thats good for me. ...

Hot day? Hold onto that toupee, Grandad!

Advantages: Wonderful engine, practical, reliable, climate control comedy value
Disadvantages: Running costs, driving position

therefore set out to find a larger car and a people carrier, or MPV as I think they are usually called now, fitted the bill. We ended up with a 1999 Ford Galaxy 2.8 V6 Ghia X, which was top of the range when it was new so has lots of toys to play with. We hadn’t intended to buy the 2.8 model and started out looking for a nearly-new 2.3. At that time there seemed to be very few second hand Galaxy’s around, but we preferred them to the other people carriers we had tried so in the end had little choice but to go for one with the larger engine. My inner boy racer was pleased, but my inner Scrooge still wonders whether we should have hung on for the smaller engined model. To start with the best bit, the engine is smooth, powerful and very quiet until you put your foot down, when it makes a glorious sporty noise. The performance ...

Review of Ford Galaxy 2.8 V6 6-speed

Can You Feel The Ford?

Advantages: Spacious, practical, relatively cheap to run
Disadvantages: Uncomfortable seats, noisy diesel engine, turbo lag

I liked our last Ford Galaxy. It had a lovely 2.8 litre V6 petrol engine which was smooth, powerful and sounded great, although the average fuel consumption of about 24mpg wasn?t a plus point. Unfortunately, once it had covered 80,000 miles it seemed to embark on a programme of self-destruction. It never ground to a complete halt but developed several faults in fairly quick succession, culminating in the death of the air conditioning part of the climate control system. The Galaxy is like a mobile greenhouse and really needs air conditioning, so as a new unit would have cost almost as much as the car was worth my wife and I reluctantly felt the time had come to change it. Being the owners of three fast-growing daughters, two dogs and a Big Luggage habit whenever we go away, we decided to get another people carrier. We narrowed ...
