I Used to run a 1998 BMW 728i, and found in this time of credit crunch that selling it for something that did not cost the earth to run was a wise move, this was well over 18 months ago. Whilst looking for a replacement for the BWM, I bought as a temporary runaround, a 1999 115kmile Mondeo TD LX for £1k.
I have long since spent the proceeds of the BMW's sale on other items (Holiday to Spain! :o ) and simply kept the Mondeo!
Its as slow as a Snail, actually, Snails challenge you at the lights, Its engine is from the dark ages sadly, that said, its very much an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" design and very durable - despite over 10k of hard nedgect, its barely used 1/2 a litre of oil!
In the 13months of ownership, it has cost me less than a single tyre for the BMW in repairs - Broken os/f spring which cost me £85 to get fixed, in a similar period of time, my BMW cost me well over £2k, and this was on a car that cost 3 times the price of the Mondeo (Comparing like with like when new) - Nothing has broken on it bar the spring, the comparison with the many niggly faults my BMW endured has re-evaluated my take on cars somewhat!
It passed its MOT with no advisories, and I've scraped 540miles out of a tank (admittedly, it ran out of fuel @ 541.)
If you want to re-experience slow, but, are not bothered ultimately as you simply want bargain basement motoring, you really could not do better.
Its plain to see , from the point of view of somebody who waved "bye" to the Ford Sierra dustbins of old, how far they have come with the Mondeo.

Advantages: Workhorse engine, well proportioned boot/saloon to carry shopping, luggage and people, spares aplenty in scrapyards Disadvantages: Front bulbs a pain to change.
