"Ford Mondeo ST220"

I bought my ST220 about 18 months ago. I changed from an Impreza Turbo and was concerned that nothing would live up to that. The ST is not a car of the same kind but has maintained my "need for speed" but added comfort and space. It has also reduced my insurance and no one tries to nick it anymore!

The car was reasonably priced I thought at £12k and insurance is not too bad, just shop around for a deal, I have just used the AA and am paying £440 fully comp (that includes 2 claims and 2 speeding fines hanging over from the Subaru) but I'm happy with AA.

The ST220 has all the extras, mine is a 52 plate and includes leather seats, heated in the front, 6 CD player, heated front screen, aircon ESP (more later) and cannot be faulted for space and ride comfort. The first long journey I did in this was Yorkshire to London. I drove it with no stops and when I got out it was as if I had jsut driven to town, amazing.

Running costs aren't the cheapest in the world. Tyres cost in the region of £160, make sure you buy the right ones not jsut the speed rating but high loading too otherwise insurance can be invalidated, ask at your local Kwik Fit store for their advice.

Fuel consumption is a little high, around town i average about 23 miles to the gallon, on a run this gets up into the high 30's. But remember this is a 3 litre V6 beast of a engine, don't buy it for good fuel consuption, buy a diesel or Kia that does 60 MPG.

Servicing at Ford main dealers brings all the usual extortionate labour costs and they never repair when they can replace, but that's no different to other manufacurers. Oh and my dealer never seems to have 220 parts in stock, some have to be ordered from Germany.

Mondeo's of all specs do have some common problems, the main one I have come across with mine are the rear bushes. These have to be replaced after about 20-25k. It's not just a bush though, the whole rear sub-frame has to be replaced. I got mune under warranty, but I understand this can cost around £500. I also had a starter motor problem a couple of months ago. Not just a starter motor, had to have the flywheel and part of the clutch replaced. Took them over a week and bill was £900, ouch!!!

Of course Ford UK are totally not interested when you try to get them to accept that 35k mileage is not acceptable for a starter motor.

However don't let this put you off. Overall the ST220 is a fabulous car, great looks, great performance and spacious. Room for the wife and kids and all the holiday stuff, we drove to Holland last summer with all our cases etc and I didn't even have to take the parcel shelf out.

Finally the ESP (Electronic Stability Programme). This is a kind of traction control system used by Ford. It applies braking to wheels if they start to skid. In the ST220 you can turn it on and off. Usually you have it on, gets you around wet roundabouts a treat, and in the snow can get you up hills almost like a 4 wheel drive. But when you want some fun turn it off and feel the car at its rawest. Slides are possible with a bit of effrot and make driving a breeze, give it a go.

If you want to enjoy your driving get one of these, throw it about on your own drive sensibly when the family is with you, good all rounder.
