Being in the motor trade I get the pleasure of driving a vast variety of cars, being connected to motor sport means that I get great pleasure from driving “non standard” cars. The ST200 is one of the few that makes a good compromise.
I have recently had the pleasure of driving an ST200 with 10k miles on the clock. A “W” reg, in dark metallic blue. From the moment I sat in the leather recaro seat, I knew that I was in for something different, something special.
The cabin has more leather than you would find in an Italian sofa workshop. The dashboard shows it’s a road racer courtesy of the vast amount of carbon fibre look around the clocks and on the gear knob. The blue dials are monogrammed with “ST200” and the Speedo reads to 160mph – far more than anyone in the U.K. will ever see I hope.
As you turn the ignition key the dash lights up like the cockpit of a 747. Turn the key once more, and the V6 24v power plant explodes into life. Not the out and out racer you may expect, but a smooth quiet purr that can only be associated with a V6 engine.
The gear selection is precise and not at all a long throw from 1st to 2nd. The clutch is light and easy to judge the biting point. Right that’s enough, lets get out on the road!!!!
Below 3000rpm you could be mistaken for thinking this was an ordinary mondeo. Get to 3000rpm with your foot planted firmly on the floor and a whole orchestra suddenly erupts. The induction system is alive, the deep grumble of the air box sucking as much air as possible to feed these SIX hungry cylinders. The exhaust growling as it tries to get the spent gases out of the way as quickly as it ca, after all they’re no use now!
60mph approaches before you need to grab 3rd gear, but only just. As you do select 3rd there is a slight pause, maybe the orchestra has turned the page, or the power has been cut to your hi fi? But then as sudden as it goes it all starts again. There is no let up in the power of this engine.

...that sports the sensual ford racing blue (some may say imperial blue) and a modified rear bumper alowing two exit pipes from the exaust system and also not forgetting the lovely 17inch multi spoke wheels which in my mind makes the car somehow look more masculine and butch compared to that of the st24 which is also a fantastic car. over all the car looks more agressive and purpose full and we havent got to the best bit the engine!!! however i will ... ...im predjudice because im a ford nut but it was so noticable to me i couldnt leave it out. any way this isnt about slagging off performance vectras and i hope it doesnt appear that way because thats not what i wanted and as ive said above the two rivals are very good cars but if you want somthing that is great and that little bit ahead with a good road performance car heritage with the likes of the cossie's and rs's with a bit of exclusivity thrown ...

The Mondeo ST 200, (201 BHP but the name sounds better rounded off). This is produced from a bullet proof Duratech 2544cc V6 engine. The car has traction control and ABS to help you in any emergency situation.
The ST 200 was made from 1999 to 2000 on a T, V, W and X plate due to the revision of ... ...with most other sports cars, Ford have taken the basis of a family car and made a cross breed part family and part sports.
Suggestions for modifying this car into a better car are:
Upgrade the brakes to a perforamce pad and discs such as Ferodo's (Great pads and discs).

I have owned my st220 for 2 yeas now and it isthe worst car I have eer owned, I have had to replace the clutc after only 37,000 miles and now thecar is at 48,000 it is needing doing again, then there is the rear sub-frame bushes a ossible cv joint, the reliability is very poor, in fact when I replace this car it wil not be another ford and has put me offof buying a ford ever again. the onl good thing is i looks cool lots of features and the engie sounds good but nne of these things make up for the failings ...

Mondeo's of all specs do have some common problems, the main one I have come across with mine are the rear bushes. These have to be replaced after about 20-25k. It's not just a bush though, the whole rear sub-frame has to be replaced. I got mune under warranty, but I understand this can cost around £500. I also had a starter motor problem a couple of months ago. Not just a starter motor, had to have the flywheel and part of the clutch replaced. Took them over a week and bill was £900, ouch!!!
Of course Ford UK are totally not interested when you try to get them to accept that 35k mileage is not acceptable for a starter motor.
However don't let this put you off. Overall the ST220 is a fabulous car, great looks, great performance and spacious. Room for the wife and kids and all the holiday stuff, we drove to Holland ...

After selling my Mazda RX8 last year due to high ownership costs and a few too many repairs, I was looking for bit of a compromise. I didn't have to look far.
A trip to my local Ford dealer and a test drive soon cleared the idea of any compromise. For a start there was the price, a pre-registered 07 plate with 15 miles on the clock and £10,000 off list price. It was a steal.
Running in took place over the next 3 weeks with a drive to Italy and back. 2,800 miles,averaging 31.5mpg and motorway cruising at about 80mph was pretty impressive. Even now it happily returns 27mpg under normal driving.

You know a car is a bit special when you don't mind going to work because it means you can drive the car. I get up early every day to drive my ST220. In fact I get up at 5.30 and smile.
When I went to replace my W reg Mondeo Zetec about a year ago, I went with the intention of swapping it for a Mazda 6. Several chaps in work had raved about the 6 and I must admit I was tempted. For some unknown reason though, I called into the local Ford dealer on the way and ended up being persuaded into buying a 6 month old, jet black ST220 with all the bells and whistles for £10,000 less than the new list price.
