An admission first of all: I am a devotee of the Blue Oval.
Here's my previous: Mk 1 Cortina, Zephyr, Mk IV Cortina, Granada, Scorpio 2.3 and now the Scorpio Ultima. ( I have had other affairs: Standard, Mini, Marina (ugh!), Talbot Alpine and BMW but they were only passing flirtations),
At this writing (May 2008) I have had the car 10 years and it is, without doubt, the best car I have ever had.
It was 11 months old when I bought it from Dovercourt, a main dealer. The car had previously been used by Dovercourt's finance director who had put about 14,000 miles on the clock, so it was nicely run in with long runs. My use has been more modest, averaging about 7,000 miles a year. It has now done close to 100,000 miles.
Have I had problems? I have had to replace components like pads, power steeering pump, aircon condenser, alternator, steering rack but nothing that I would call major. I have had the car serviced annually by the main dealer who I have found to be reasonably priced. In view of the car's age I shall now be using an independent, in the village where I live to save a bit on servicing costs. I have been quite meticulous in having an oil change every 6 months.
Overall, maintenance, service and repairs have worked out at about £4000 for the ten years I have had the car.
It is a joy to drive with still plenty of woomph when you hit the kick down. The leather seats show no sign of wear. They are so easy to get in and out of now that the wife and I are getting older and moving around is not as easy as it was.
All the electronics work. Friends still marvel at the way the nearside mirror automatically moves down when reverse is engaged.
My historic fuel consumption is 10.9 litres/100 km (around 30 mpg) and although I drive fast , I avoid fierce acceleration and braking.
We have thought about getting a C-Max or something similar but when you compare the two cars - and the outlay involved in changing - we think "Let's not bother".
