After selling my Mondeo TD, I was after a car that would get me around from A to B cheaply, while still offer a decent specification. After hunting up and down the columns in the autotrader I decided that a high spec Sierra would do the trick. There aint many cars I havenot had and I liked my previous Sierra about 6 years ago. However the police seem to like it as well and I was always getting stopped.
I had first decided on a Turbo diesel, I know there are slow and very heavy to drive without power steering. The first example I looked at was advertised for £700 and it had power steering on a H Plate. The car was decribed as a mint example and the owner would siad in the advert that a RAC or AA inspection was welcome.
The owner said it was given up the car on health grounds, so i thought this is the car for me before I even saw it. First impressions of the car where good, a slightley off colour front wing ( a New wing had been fitted at some time) two just legal tyres and an engine with so much back pressure it was fit for scrap(back pressure is were the cylinders and/or piston rings are worn excessively and compression is lost in the cylinder which escapes into the main part of the engine. If you pull the dipstick slightley out and notice it is puffing smoke, then the engine is worn. The easier it is to see the smoke the worse the wear is).Back pressure on a diesel is bad as lack of compression will make it hard to start and as well as that the exhaust smoke was bad were reveved.
The owner had came down to £350 after my offer of £300 which gave me the money to pay for a replacement engine. But I decined the offer after he reveved the engine as he was slightly unset with me by this time and I noticed a big start across the Turbo. This completely put me off and I left.
Next I came across a J reg dull metallic blue 2.0GTI estate which looked rather sad in my local car dealers which had been a part exchange. The asking price of £550 seem a little high, but she was tax and tested. Things that where wrong included a blowing exhaust, the exhaust was new but required the joints bodging.A tailgate that didnot lock due to the lock rusting away whcih required welding.
I haggled with them and drove the car away for the bargain price of £325.She had all the toys which included PAS and unmarked Alloys with Mint tyres...Yippey.The car came up a shiney colour when slightly polished. The interior is clean and everything works except the radio and the paperwork shows only two owners from new.
The car drove nice until you hit 50mph and the car shook very badly that it was unsafe to drive. After testing the rear drive train for excessive wear my friend touched a tyre and give out a cry, problem found!!! One tyre had a bulge on the tread which had resulted in the steel wire caseing coming out of the rubber. One new tyre for £17.00 and she was back in business.
Ive now had the car for 1 month, she slightley smokey when hot, but this is normal for 2.0 DOHC engines. the rest of the car is spot on and I can honestly say shes a bit of a bargain.I will use her for 3 to 6 months and then valet her and hopefully sell her for a profit.
The car is nice and smooth and averages around 26mpg around the doors and insurance is a group 12. The power steering is still a bit heavy.Space inside the car is massive with it being an estate.
Stay away from buying any basic Sierra, unless in first class condtiona and it was made from 1990 onwards when where changed. Make sure it was not had a hard life, excessive worn interiors etc. And stay away from Ex taxis unless the prices is cheap. Prices for work and spares for this size of car are cheap.A bargain of a car if your looking for something about £700
Advantages: Goodlooking, cheap, reliable car! Disadvantages: Alot of abused, rustbuckets out there!!
Since I've been driving, I've drove alot of different vehicles. I have only ever owned Sierra's. I have had 2 to date. My 1st being an 1.8GL. Had my 1st crash in this one and she still came up trumps! But in the end piston rings went and smoked liked a trooper. She'd gone 145,000miles. I had a new engine in her, but typical ford, the bodywork started to heavily rust. Allowing damp into the back of the car. Hence it was time to kiss goodbye to my ... ...The good news was, I moved onto bigger and better sierra. My current car, 2.0iGLS. J reg. For the1st couple of years, I only had to maintain her. After that kept having a pressure problem which in the end ending up by blowing the head gasket. So once again, resulted in my having a recon engine installed into my car. There was also a hairline crack in the head and a problem with the water pump. While they had the engine apart, had the timing chain ...

...of mine was selling his Ford Seirra 2.0l Inj. Ghia privately and I decided to have a look at it. Although it is classed as an "old car", being E Registration (1988), it was classier than what I had been driving previously. Being the Ghia model, it has all the mod cons - Sunroof, Electric windows (front and back), Inflatable Seats, Electronic Antenna, Alarm System, 15in Alloy Wheels. It is a very comfortable car to drive, and although being an Injection ... ...have spent a lot of time in my Seirra, and have made the effort to keep her looking good, and she has repayed me by being extremely reliable. Advantages: cost of buying, price of parts, ease of access to engine. Disadvantages: Ford dont make them anymore
I have owned a 1989 Sierra 2.0 estate since 1996 and have had no problems with it during this time. I has only once broken down and that was due to a broken wire which the RAC fixed very quickly. Apart from servicing I have had no other expenses in that time and it has always gone through its MOT fine. The performance of the single overhead cam engine has been good with enough power for whatever job I needed to do. With the rear seats folded down ... ...and our two children and a dog on holiday on many occasions. I also average 25 mpg round town going up to 35 mpg on a distance run on various roads. The car has now covered 105,000 miles (it has covered 40,000 when purchased) and the bodywork is stll basically solid with only rust on the rear wheelarches, 2 doors and the tailgate and even this is still onlysurface rust. Overall I would recommend a Sierra to anyone just be careful that the bodywork ...

Quick review of Ford Sierra 2.0
2.0i GLS Bought from ebay 2005 for £330.
I was lucky and got a good one, nice and pokey, not done 100k yet either, Nothing has broken in 2 years. Being a rare GLS it has sports suspension which is far superior to the standard wallowy affair most will have by now.
I bought it to do motorways, this one has even toured France and I didn't bother with breakdown cover as I knew I wouldn't need it.
It is very hard to find a good one but they are out there and will give good reliable use. I'm a big fan of RWD and there's nothing else really. Try to find a decent sized RWD hatchback now......er.........no there aren't any. ...

Advantages: Big, Bold and Beautiful Disadvantages: None so Far!
I am now the proud owner of a 4-year-old 406 1.9TD. And what can I say - 'What a car!'. I love it. My previous car was a FordSierra2.0 Petrol and this new 406 delivers all the power I'm used to with the extra comforts of a newer car.
Power steering comes as standard, which is a godsend in my opinion. I wondered why my arms always ached after a long drive before! As I read in a previous opinion the full lock does not give as tight a turning circle as I am used to but it's only a niggle.
Other extras include electric front windows, air conditioning and a 10 CD changer. The windows have two position button - press them hard and the window opens fully. This can be a little annoying, especially if it's raining!
The air conditioning works hot or cold. I thought air conditioning only gave you cool air but it actually de-humidifies hot ...

Firstly , let me apologise. Please don't expect a technical review from me, this is written from a mum's point of view and not of Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear.
I am a bit of a closet Ford fan. I have owned an escort popular, an XR3, a cabriolet, and a Sierra2.0 Ghia. When the children came along it was to expand our car capacity so we bought our first Galaxy.
I owned my 1997 Galaxy since almost new and even though it had only reached 50,000 on the clock, we thought it was time to trade up and change to a diesel engine.
I wasn't expecting to get a brand new car but by chance we did. It was at the cost of no holiday and no more savings in our account but at least I've got a good set of wheels that hopefully will not let me down on my various trips down the M3.
The Ghia version gives you a little added extra but don ...
