I have just returned from a three day, three night package at Champney's Forest Mere Spa. I had reservations initially, because I had booked a relatively inexpensive, 'bargain' stay and was expected --as is the custom in the U.S. to "Get what you pay for." I could not have been more surprised or pleased. From the moment my brother and I walked in the door, and for the duration of our stay, we received top-notch treatment. Our treatments were conveniently scheduled; every effort was made to accommodate a change I needed to make at the last minute. When we mentioned we had postcards that needed mailing, but no stamps, the office staff made sure our cards were stamped and sent out that very day. The blanket and extra pillows I requested were delivered to our room almost before I could hang up the telephone. The rooms were comfortable and an amazing and generous array of samples (large sized, at that, as opposed to the stingy sizes I'm used to receiving in the US)had been left in our bathrooms for us to enjoy, as well as ample supplies of coffee, tea, chocolate, creamers and sweetners which were replenished every day at NO charge. For those who complain about being charged for every cup of coffee, try coming to the US and demanding coffee/tea/chocolate in your room every day for free-you'll get a nasty surprise. I've been to several spas back at home, and I have to say that for the price, this spa visit was an EXCEPTIONAL value. The staff bent over backwards to ensure that every moment of our stay was perfect and I have absolutely no complaints. The only negative experiences I encountered were with the rudeness of some of the other guests (several of whom were, I'm ashamed to say -fellow Americans-- who seemed to voice constant frustrations with a lack of 'immediate gratification' of their slightest whim, the lack of soda machines, and the small portions served at those delectable, gourmet meals (Hey folks, this is a HEALTH farm, remember???). These guests had a perpetual appearance of those "poor, pinched faces, giving off the miseries" and we quickly learned to avoid them. Happily, they were few in number and we made friends with several other guests who were at the spa. My brother and I were so pleased that we are planning another trip, this time to Henlow, in 2005. Undertand, that I am a lower-middle class, US Civil servant, making a less than spectacular wage and my brother is in the military. We are by no means of the 'luxe' class and were so very gratified to find that the weight of our respective purses in no way affected the treatment we received. Our US spas with their condescending attitudes could learn a good deal from Champneys.
Advantages: Close proximity to Sussex Disadvantages: More like a business hotel, pricey
I have visited Forest Mere twice - end of 2001 and November 2002. Every year a group of us ladies get together and take outselves off for a weekend of relaxation. Forest Mere is in a lovely location, beautiful lake views and surrounding woodland. It is close to Liphook in Hampshire.
Rooms are fairly spacious, however very much like a business hotel - although perhaps superior rooms are a little more sumptuous? We always book standard twin rooms.
... ...group probably wont return to Forest Mere is the lack of facilities for a group of people in the evening - you can have coffee after your meal, and then all public rooms are for peace and quiet - nowhere to chat. We end up returning to someones room and spend the evening chatting there, before retiring to bed by 9:30 pm - still this is all about relaxing!
The pool is good, the showers are not so good (very often you have to queue for a shower). ...

Advantages: Beautiful, semi-rural location. Comfortable rooms. Spankingly clean and well maintained facilities. Disadvantages: Rather pricey. Difficult to reach directly if not travelling by car. Somewhat patchy quality of therapists.
A friend and I visited this spa for last summer and intend to visit again shortly. We travelled by train to Liphook to find great difficulty in tracking down the one cab firm in the area to take us to the spa, so drive if you can. The spa itself is absolutely sumptuous. The accommodation, food and facilities could not be faulted. Great range of treatments and activities. Nicest pool ever, with pre-dinner dips allowing guests to view rabbits scampering ... ...from the odd assortment of characters giving the little 30 minute talks. On arrival, we were put on a schedule - each treatment mapped out on a timetable, with further slots to be filled in with our chosen activities. Such regimentation can be a bit bewildering for spa virgins - I think the trick is to avoid packing in too much. Top tips? Bring smartish clothing for the dining rooms and a little bag to pad round with during the day to carry the timetable, ...

Advantages: Proximity to London Disadvantages: Too big.
Went to Forest Mere on a 3 day break with a friend. Have been to several healthfarms before including Henlow Grange and Springs Hydro. Forest Mere is the flagship of this trio of spas. The room we had was lovley, but there is a noticeable policy of pennypinching. Unlike other healthfarms, every coffee is charged for , and there is a lack of water fountains in all areas including the pool area, which means you have to buy your own constantly. The restaurants ... ...of loo paper which was not replaced for 2 days, while the showers ran out of shampoo/conditioner.The receptionist checking us in and out was stressed and unhelpful; their is a high staff turn over and availibility and organisation of treatments is erratic. One therapist failed to materialise to do a pedicure I had booked and no one realised that she hadn't even turned up for work that day. All in all it seems too big a place with not enough staff ...

Advantages: Lovely pool and therapists Disadvantages: Appalling customer service and mean spiritedness
...friend and I stayed at Forest Mere in Jan 2003 on a 3 day, 2 night package. I echo many of the opinions on this site. We were charged for every cup of coffee and had to ask for tap water to avoid falling for the large bottle of Hildon routine, our prebooked treatments were at inconvenient times (e.g.7 and 8pm when dinner is 6.15-8.30) and when we tried to change they got nasty and said we would have to pay. They also booked our treatments close together ... ...Dinner was good although they tried to make us share a table when we had specifically booked for 2, but lunch and breakfast were disappointing. If you are going horse riding you need a car and it is a good half hour drive (no-one tells you this). The gym is fairly unimpressive as well. Over all it feels as if everything is done for their convenience and profit rather than your enjoyment - we would never stay again.

Advantages: setting Disadvantages: attitude of company
During a recent stay at forest mere I returned more stressed and frustrated than when I arrived. The treatments were badly organised and the inclusive treatments were mean and rushed.
There is no Jacuzzi but a very cold whirlpool and the cafe does not open until 6, meaning that if you arrive after three you cannot get anything to eat.
When I complained it was suggested to me that I had arrived wanting compensation!
Day visitors had to hire a robe ...
