..., and here it is, all working properly (you lie device manager)
Look on the disc, masses of folders and files, all gibberish and unreadable by my computer. Finally find a manual, contains a 16 page PDF document. Quite possibly the worst manual I have ever seen. It's not until page 10 that you get a bit about setting it up on your computer. Then all it tells you is to get windows to do it.
Now I am not an expert so having sought some advice, I identify that I have to do some with with disk management, and eventually work out myself that it needs a partition, drive letter and formatting. Quite important, and some guidance from Formac would have been nice.
It's now working, it's very quiet, and lightening fast, but first impressions do count, and the stress of setting it up, with the gradual dawning that it may have to go back with all the hassle...

Advantages: Very fast, reliable and quiet... and Cheap! Disadvantages: Absolutely nothing!
...Maxtor have been there since the beginning of the home PC - They were making 100MB harddisks 12 years ago that are just as good as their 400GB+ disks today.
I have always liked the combination of price and reliability Maxtor drives have offered. You can pick up a Maxtor disk for £10-£15 cheaper on average than you can other manufacturers. My first Maxtor disk was a monstrously big 10GBdisk back in 1999, and since then I have truly been hooked.
Never once has a Maxtor disk failed on me, or had any indication of doing so. SMART status on all of my drives has always been 100%, and that 10GBdisk is still happily sat in a USB enclosure on top of my PC.
Anyway, with the 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 I have been using as my Primary disk for over 3 years getting a bit on the full side, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I wanted a disk...

Advantages: Size, capacity, does the job! Disadvantages: Stand, heat
...I bought the 250gb Buffalo harddisk from Amazon and paid 95gbp. I need the extra capacity as I have a laptop which perfectly meets my needs with a 20gbharddisk, but then purchased a 60gb iPod which required extra space.
The buffalo drive perfectly meets my requirements, and now is home to my photo's, music and video.
Positives
------------
Capacity - unless major movie files are your needs, 250gb is sufficient for most users. In fact even if you are downloading movies that are 2gb in size - that is still 125 movies!
Noise - it doesn't make any.
Reliability - been using it every day for 6 months and it is has not let me down once.
Ease of use - plugged in to various pc's, in various countries, and it just works. Two lights on front (Power and Access) so nothing too complicated there. Power switch on back allowing manual on...
