I have used many different formatting programs in my time on the old PC, many costing a few pennies and not worth the packaging they came in. I have been using two certain 3GP converters for some time, one to convert TO 3GP and one to convert FROM 3GP, both programs doing a fine job. I have also had several other programs which convert MPG to AVI, or MP4 to WMV, MP3 to WMA and many more, but after a certain person told me about a certain program which does it all in one I had to give it a go.
And that program in question is Format Factory, which you can get for free from www.download.com and other places.
** WHAT IS IT THEN..?
It is a Free program which will easily convert most formats into almost any other format. The download is just over 16MB and comes in a zipped folder. Once installed it will sit on your PC, taking up less than 60MB of space, until you need it
** THE PROGRAM ITSELF…
When you open the program you are presented with several options…
Video: which will convert to MP4, AVI, 3GP, MKV, WMV, MPG, VOB,MOV,FLV and SWF.
Audio: which will convert
to MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC,MMF, AMR, M4R, OGG,MP2, and WAV.
Pictures: which will convert to JPG, PHG, ICO, BMP, GIF, TIF, PCX and TGA.
ROM Device\DVD\CD\ISO: which allows you to convert DVD to Video file, music CD to audio file, DVD/CD to ISO/CSO and ISO to CSO (and visa-versa)
Advanced: which gives you the options of video merger, giving you the capabilities of merging video footage together, which helps you merge several pieces of work into one.
** USING THE PROGRAM…
This is something that is picked up so quickly once you start using it as every type of converting, be it Audio, video or picture, the way it is achieved is the same.
Browse through your system until you find the files which you want to convert.
You can also change several settings to customise your files by clicking on the ’High quality and size’ link (video), ‘High Quality’, (Audio) and ‘output file’ (picture). Although the default setting do tend to be adequate for most needs. Then finally, * Click ‘OK’
Your chosen files will appear on the original screen under the red title of Format Factory’.
* You then simply click ‘start’ (middle of the top row, green arrow) and the files will convert to your chosen format and into the destination folder you chose on installation. (This folder can be checked at anytime direct form the FF home screen by clicking on the ‘Output folder’ logo, left on top row).
** OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO…
You can change the colour of the homepage by clicking on the ‘Skin’ link, (right side top corner), the colour include Luna blue, Aqua, Obsidian and Silver. (obsidian is like a grey colour).
Also, you can also change the language settings if you need to.
You can also get a free movie download tool, (although I haven’t done that as yet)
So that’s the basics for Format Factory, what it is and what it does…
** IN CONCLUSION…
A nice little program which does exactly what it says on the tin, it converts almost any format into almost any other format, and at a good speed too. But the best thing about this is that it’s completely free, gratis, without charge, at no cost, complimentary, on the house…get it?
Anyway., as I said earlier, I do tend to be converting many files, (so it seems) and I have several little programs on my systems to do the jobs the best they can, so when this was suggested to me I had to at least try it out. And I’m glad I did really, as it is so simple to use and converts files in what seems like no time at all, probably faster than some high prices programs, For example, I can convert a 50MB video file from 3GP to MPG in a matter of minutes, although the speed will depend on which format you want to start with and finish with.
Once you have used it a few times you’ll realise just how simple this ‘free’ program really is. It is so simple to use, even the most computer novice will get used to the program in no time at all, as it is what I like to call ‘self explanatory’.
Personally, I am simply amazed at how this can be a free program considering the vast amount of formats it can convert, some of them many people will never have to use anyway but they are still there just in case. And the speed in which it converts is without doubt one of the fastest freebie converters on the market, in fact it is probably quicker than some hefty priced programs.
In all, it is a cracking little program which sits on your PC until you need to use it, and then it does the job it is meant to do with so much ease you’d have expected to pay a small fortune for it. Also, which does sort of help with some programs, it is nice to look at with everything on the home screen well presented and easy to see.
** DOWNSIDES…
For me, I found that some of the converted video files were a little shaky, seeming to struggle through the film, spoiling the perfect footage which I had shot, (YES perfect). Most of these tended to be when I converted TO 3GP, even after changing the settings before conversion, using the old trial and error system, but the ’stuttering’ like picture persisted. (So I was forced back to using my old faithful 3GP converter which I had been using for years, and the pictures were again perfect for watching on my mobile device).
That is the only downfall about this program for me, (you never know, it may not be the program itself, it could be something I’m doing, or not doing, which is causes this spasmodic effect…. I’m open to any criticism and advice, no man is perfect, although I do come close, LOL)
