Having read the foundation trilogy and Prelude to Foundation, I can tell you that I like them a lot. They are set in the far future, in the middle of a vast empire. Advantages: Superbly structured well told SF novel
Disadvantages: you need to read the others first

This book was written close to the end of Asimov's life. And as such don't expect this book to be the cutting edge of literary science fiction. What you can expect is a very well written, well plotted book with superb characterisations. Asimov has never written books with massive amounts of action so if you want graphic descriptions of space battles you have probably picked up the wrong book. An excellent book, meant as a prequel to his best selling 'Foundation' series, which you will need to have read if you want to get the best from this book. The story is well written and fills in many plot-holes from the foundation series.
