A few facts before this review starts, This is the Seventh and final book in the foundation series. Understandable really as Isaac Asimov died just 2 weeks after completing the book in April 1992. It is widely accepted that Asimov regarded Hari Seldon as his alter ego and in this book Hari..... Well you'll have to read it.
The book follows the decline of the Empire and the coming to fruition of Hari Seldons great plans and works. Mixed in are flash back to Haris’ earlier days, which are used to fill in many missing parts of Haris’ earlier life and some of the crisis moments of the Seldon plan.
You are shown the clash between Hari and Cleon II, Emperor of the known Universe. But more importantly the manoeuvres between Hari and Cleons adviser, Eto Demerzel. Eto it is once again revealed as it was in earlier books that he is actually a robot and has his own agenda in regards to the Sheldon plan. The planets are descending into chaos as the empires grip on them slips and humanity regains some of its own destiny. I will reveal no more of the book, give it a go you will enjoy it.
A fitting finale to the foundation series. after this book no questions are left unanswered. The interaction between Hari and Eto does not go all Etos way as you might expect when you are up against a know it all robot.
The ending is by no means what you might think, but it was simply great and as I initially stated, very fitting. Thank you Isaac you wrote some wonderful Sci-Fi with lots and lots of jewels of imagination to the sci-fi enthusiast. A highly recommended read as is all of the Series.
Greg.

Advantages: Gret read, as with all the rest of his books! Disadvantages: None
Having read the foundation trilogy and Prelude to Foundation, I can tell you that I like them a lot. They are set in the far future, in the middle of a vast empire. Hari Seldon, a mathimatician, has calculated a method of forseeing the social future. By the end of his life, he has turned this imprecise technique into a precise science. He sees the falling of the empire, and so establishes two empires at the opposite ends of the galexy, and the foundation ...

Advantages: Superbly structured well told SF novel Disadvantages: you need to read the others first
This book was written close to the end of Asimov's life. And as such don't expect this book to be the cutting edge of literary science fiction. What you can expect is a very well written, well plotted book with superb characterisations.
Asimov has never written books with massive amounts of action so if you want graphic descriptions of space battles you have probably picked up the wrong book. But if you want a good SF novel this is one for you.

Advantages: well written, links in well with the rest of the series Disadvantages: none
An excellent book, meant as a prequel to his best selling 'Foundation' series, which you will need to have read if you want to get the best from this book. The story is well written and fills in many plot-holes from the foundation series. Now, for the story:
The Galactic Empire has endured for tens of thousands of years, and has reached its maximum extent. But now it is failing, and the structure of government and commerce slowly collapses. Of course, ... ...inventor of psychohistory, a science which can predict the future. In a hundred years, the empire will be gone forever, so Seldon contrives a plan to set up two scientific foundations, which will preserve all human knowledge, and build a new empire within a single millenium. However, political opposition from First Ministers, Emperors and the sinister Comission for Public Safety mean that you'll have to read the book to find out what happens. Unlike ...

The seventh and final novel in Asimov's Hugo Award-winning "Foundation" series. Earlier in the series, Hari Seldon, the guiding genius of the Foundation, was a figure of history. By going back to the great mathematician's life, this volume fills in the remaining gaps in the story. From the Back CoverFor more than forty years, Isaac Asimov thrilled millions of readers with his bestselling Foundation series, a spellbinding tale of the future that spans thousands of years and dozens of worlds. Completed just weeks before his death in April 1992, Forward the Foundation is the seventh and concluding volume of this masterwork, which was awarded a Hugo for the 'Best All-Time Science Fiction Series'. In the earlier Foundation novels, Hari Seldon, the guiding genius of the Foundation, was a figure of history. By going back to the great mathmatician's life, in Forward the Foundation, Asimov fills in the remaining gaps in his epic story. Asimov acknowledged that he always regarded Seldon as his alter ego, and this novel is all the more poignant for the fact that he himself died only weeks after writing about Seldon's death. A resounding tour de force, Forward the Foundation offers the dramatic climax to the Foundation series, and perhaps the greatest moment in science fiction to date. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
