Forza Motorsport 2. One of the genre defining games of the year for me and many others. When you first load up the game you are presented with simple, 'easy on the eye' menus which are clear to follow.
GAMEPLAY The game is very flexible, which allows a wide variety of people to play. If you are a younger person, you can turn the various Driving Aids on, which will help you to keep the car on the track. Or if you are older or more experienced you can turn individual aids off, which not only make it harder but increase the amount of credits you win at the end of a race. Turn 10, the people behind Forza Motorsport 2, also spent a lot of time getting the cars handling just right. As a result you can feel the difference between a FWD car, an AWD car and a RWD car. Turn 10 has also spent a lot of time on an area called Telemetry. This allows you to see what is happening on the inside of your car in real-time. For example, at the beginning of a race the tyres are cold, but as the race progresses you can see the temperature the tyres are at, or the G forces that are placed on the driver. The A.I has also made a great step forward. They eachj have their own personality, behave differently in races, have their racing lines and even have their own favourite colour. The career is lengthy and drawn out. Nearer the end of career the races do become longer and the appeal dampens slightly, but there is still plenty to keep you entertained. There is Time Trials, Arcade Mode, Free Run, a Livery Editor where you can paint your cars and a Photo Mode where you can take photos of your rides.
GRAPHICS/SOUND The game runs at a concrete 60 frames per second, and this makes the game very smooth. The grahpics are superb in High Definition and never jerk or stutter. When you enter Photo Mode from the pause menu or a replay, the smoothness is turned down slightly, and the Anti Aliasing is turned up, which smoothes out te edges and makes the car crisper looking for the photo. Each car has their own distinctive engine note and when you upgrade various parts, you hear the difference it makes.
ONLINE PLAY The online play can vary a lot. For example, you can get a room of people who are set out to have a clean race, or you can get a room of people who are determined to ruin your race. An upside to this is that the host can turn the collisions off, so that you dont hit each other. It is mainly down to personal preference at the end of the day. However, if you can get a good group of people to race with you can have some great racing. There is also a great new feature called the Auction House. This allows you to auction a car you have acquired in Career. You can sell standard cars, upgraded cars or works of art that you have created using the Livery Editor. You can also gift cars to your freinds via Xbox Live.
Advantages: Runs at a smooth 60fps, over 300 cars, expansive career mode and excellent car physics Disadvantages: Hard to find customised cars in the auction house, More tracks would have been good.
