I have been reading Four Four Two on and off for a couple of years. I am an armchair football fan and like to keep up with the latest gossip from all clubs as well as finding out more in-depth views on current issues and events. While Four Four Two does not cover the gossip aspect of football so well (being a monthly publication it is not practical to try and keep up with the daily changing gossip) it does provide insight into current issues and events throughout football.
** Background ** Four Four Two was launched in 1994 and has established itself as one of the leading sports magazines in the world. Specialising in football news and interviews, the magazine has won the following awards for its contribution to sports journalism:
“UK Sports Magazine of the year” from the Sports Industry Awards in 2002 “UK Best Editor of a consumer special interest magazine” from the British Society of Magazine Editors Awards in 2002.
** Appearance ** The magazine has a glossy cover and a good quality feel to it. The cover is normally dominated by a photo of the subject of the main interview in the magazine (see below) as well as some of the main features of the magazine. The features mentioned are those that are specific to this issue (so regular features are not mentioned on the cover).
Overall I think the magazine has a very classy appearance, as you would expect for a magazine in this price bracket (see later).
** Contents ** On average the magazine is between 150 and 200 pages long and contains a good mix of in-depth interviews and lighthearted articles.
As with most monthly publications, Four Four Two has some regular features that are included in every issue such as letters to the editor and reviews on the latest football related books, games and videos.
Each month there is also at least one feature interview with one of the stars of the football world. The interviewee varies from month to month and is often a major star from the past, present or future of football. The subject of the interview is also often determined by the time of year and the major news from the football season. For instance over the summer there were a number of major interviews surrounding the build up to Euro 2004 and England’s opening game against France as well as interviews with members of the England squad for the tournament.
To get full enjoyment out of this magazine I would say that it is fairly important that you have at least some prior knowledge of football in general. This is because the magazine is aimed at football fans and so expects that the reader will have some knowledge of the topics covered.
I find that the interviews are well written and edited. They are factual in basis but also incorporate the views and opinions of the author giving the reader a different perspective. There is also good use of photography throughout magazine, particularly in the action shots, which are fantastic.
** Adverts ** There are lots of adverts scattered throughout the magazine used to break up the articles and sections. In addition to these, there is a section towards the back of the magazine where there is a collection of football specific adverts. These generally advertise the sale of football equipment and merchandise and may prove to be useful for active football players (as an armchair football fan the closest I get to buying football equipment is buying a football shirt to go to the pub in).
** Target Group ** Unlike a lot of other football magazines available, Four Four Two is aimed at mature readers. By this I don’t mean people who are not childish I mean older people. Put another way, the interviews and articles would probably not be much interest to younger readers due to their style, length and subject.
Four Four Two is suitable for all football fans as it covers a wide range of domestic and international stories. I would admit that there is a general bias towards the English Premiership but I have been impressed with the coverage of the other leagues in the latest issue (covering the build up to the new season). I think that all football fans will find something of interest in an issue although it may not be specific to the team they support. A lot of the topics covered are general football interviews and articles that can be enjoyed by all fans.
** Availability ** I have always found Four Four Two to be widely available in shops, newsagents and supermarkets. Priced at £3.50 it is around average price for a magazine of its size. It is possible to subscribe to Four Four Two and receive it at a discounted rate. I haven’t done this, as I do not necessarily read it every month but having a quick search I found numerous sites offering discounted subscriptions.
** My Opinion ** As an armchair football fan I like this magazine a lot. I don’t get to the games as often as I would like but do try and keep up-to-date on the football (and sport in general) news. I have found the interviews and articles well written and interesting. Even articles on football personalities from other clubs and countries have proved to be informative and engrossing.
The only thing that I am not too keen on (and it is a small thing) is that often during the large interviews there are additional small articles on the side of the page that are related in some way to the main article. I find these can be a little distracting from the main story/interview as they are separate in their own right but included half way through another (vaguely related) article. Aside from this the layout of the magazine is very good, making good use of photo’s and adverts to break the articles up.
Some of the major English clubs (Man Utd, Liverpool etc) have their own magazines giving club news and these may be more appropriate for die hard fans of these clubs that only really care about their own club news. For anyone who wants general football news and interesting interviews I don’t think you will go far wrong with this magazine, so if this is you why not give it a go?
Advantages: Excellent journalism and phoography. High quality production. Disadvantages: Slightly expensive, but even that is stretching it.

Advantages: Good read, Lots of features, Disadvantages: Bit expensive
You may have noticed that I do like my football just a little bit. Ok, that is a bit of an understatement I love the game and I am obsessed. I love Exeter City through all the things they have put me through, when I am not playing or watching it then I can read about it. There are many sources of information and media things around these days. The newspapers have all the news, gossip and reports daily, television seems to be showing several games ... ...course the Internet. The Internet has threatened to kill off all competition offering live news and all at the touch of the button. Still that has not totally happened and they all live on. Magazines still exist, and FourFourTwo has to be the best around for football nowadays. FourFourTwo has been around for some time, though a relative new addition of only a couple of years does not have the huge history of some publications. It is a more educated ...

Advantages: Some good articles Disadvantages: Contemporary articles not interesting
The issue for a football magazine is knowing who is likely to buy and read the magazine or as business studies people would say the ‘addressable market’. If you ask people are they football fans a majority of the population might say yes. If this mass of people are then asked ‘Do you ever buy a football related product or go to a game?’ then many would probably reply in the negative. Of those remaining many are only interested ... ...support for one club. The numbers who are fans of the sport but without allegiance are probably a small proportion of the numbers who expressed an interest in the game.
How then can a magazine without a bias towards a club create a niche for itself. The majority of football coverage falls into 2 categories – the personality led sensationalism of the tabloid press and the intellectualism and pseudo-social focus of the broadsheets. I know this ...

Advantages: Great writing, pix Disadvantages: Too much on Man U
...And that is exactly where Four Four Two comes in...
442 (quicker to type than Four Four Two) is the major quality football magazine in the UK (if you discount all the a*** licking narcissism of the Man U mags, that is) and it's easy to see why. I'll offer as evidence an in depth analysis of the February 2004 edition if you'll permit, because it's always best to get some detail of such things.
442 is a glossy, full colour monthly football magazine ... ...with anything like a reasonable choice. The cover contains the strapline "The Ultimate Football Magazine" and they're probably right. It's published by Haymarket Magazines and is edited by Mat Snow, a name I think I recognise from former contributions to the NME but I may be wrong. certainly the feel of the whole thing is very reminiscent of the irreverence of the good old music mag, so if Mr Snow has never been in that particular publication he ...

Advantages: Interesting articles from players and clubs alike. Useful backpages for buying football related items. Disadvantages: Some pointless articles now and again
...The only downside about the four four two magazine is that there are some articles that i believe are only space fillers, and they are the ones where they go on about football in countries such as norway etc, where to be honest not many people round here care a lot about. But other than that this is a great magazine to buy. The complexity of the writing isn't that much, so i'd say this magazine would be suitable for anyone aged 13+ ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Four Four Two"
This has got to be one of the best game shows on our television screens. It is one of the best thought out shows I have ever seen ? the music, lighting, and the general feeling of axitety is so amazing it has me sitting on the edge of my armchair. I love trying to answer the questions along with the contestant ? I personally like the way the idea of the show was put together ? the idea of setting a question and giving four possible answers to that question. The only down side is the fact that at least two of the four answers are very close to one another making it some what hard for you to decide on which is the correct answer. ...

It's a new year so its time for tabloid competition war - which can only be a god thing for the honest entrant like yourself. Want to win the Mirror's million ? - don't want to buy the paper for 28 days ? - then read the small print.
Dial the standard rate number in the paper and your collector card will be sent to you. Then write your name and address on four stamped envelopes - insert these in four envelopes addressed to the Mirror, mark these week one, week two, week three and week four. Place SAEs in these envelopes and insert in post box.
Wait - then through your front door come all 28 required token, attach to collector card and enter the draw .... wait for £1,000,000 cheque. This legal alternative is way chepaer than 28 copies of Mirror and Sunday Mirror.
Good Luck ! ...

50/50: The computer will take away two of the four possible answers to any one question.
For each question that contestants are asked they will be offered four possible answers and providing they get the correct answer they will progress up the cash ladder which stands as follows:

A contestant can choose to walk away at any time providing they have not answered the question offered ...
