Fox Hunting

Foxhunting is back in the news again as the Scottish parliament votes almost overwhelmingly to ban the sport. I will use the word “sport” throughout the opinion, judge for yourself whether it is a sport or not at the end. You only have to look at the sheer number of opinions ... Read review

Tally Ho

Advantages: control of the fox population
Disadvantages: a sensitive, immotive subject that is open to abuse

...is the hunting of the fox in its wild and natural state with a pack of hounds. A huntleader, leads a band of horsemen together with a pack of hunting dogs (usually hounds or terriers) in pursuit of a fox. The huntleader has overall control of the hunt and is responsible for those (animal and human) in his charge. The season for hunting runs from November to March and hunts outside of this time are banned. The huntsman leads the pack off by sounding ...
...will go on until the fox is killed or goes to ground. Digging out of foxes is only allowed with the express permission of the land owner. The pack of dogs will then be re-cast and the process begins again.

Hunting is not the sole preserve of the British. In fact, one can find evidence in support of the fact that the sport came from France and indeed much of the language common to the sport shows French roots (for example “Tally ... more

All for the thrill of the chase

Advantages: None what so ever
Disadvantages: As above

...In complete agony, the debilitated fox looks up and see the delectation in the hounds’ vast bright eyes. They’re rending at its limp and lifeless body, ripping its fur, tearing, shredding. Fighting over the remains until only fragments of what was once a beautiful creature lay sprinkled over the gut spilled ground.* In other words, humans have no right to imply the foxes kill for pleasure as this is what the hunters put these foxes trough ...
...have died anyway. If the fox was being a nuisance, a trained marks man could deliver a painless, quick and easy was of solving that problem. Hunt’s men proposing that hunting is the only way to keep the population of foxes down and to stop the spread of disease is illogical. The rate killed each year is less than 3% but foxes survive annual mortality rates of 70% and still restore their numbers! This overwhelming fact is one of the only classic ...

My report on fox hunting

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: loads

I have always felt that fox hunting is wrong and when i was given the opportunity to write a report on it for english coursework i was more than happy to research the topic in great depth. I hope that this opinion converts at least one person who is in favour of fox hunting to being against it. I know this is a long op but it does cover most aspects of the so called sport and therefore i would be very happy if people take the time to read it (after ...
...dual purpose of sport and fox population management. Organised traditional mounted foxhunting in England and Wales has a relatively short history compared with the hunting of hares and deer. By the late thirteenth century, King Edward I had a royal pack of foxhounds but it was not until several centuries later that foxhunting was generally taken up by the nobility. Today there are some 175 foxhunting packs in England and Wales registered with the ...

The Real Countryside Pests Have Two Legs

Advantages: The sociological study of the historical background
Disadvantages: Not effective pest control, argument has been taken over by those with a different agenda

...of the historical studies on fox hunting. Add to this the fact I from a farming background and I can swing from the emotional to the boring, farty academic stance in the blink of the eye which makes me think this could be one seriously disjointed opinion. Well lets just see where it takes us. Firstly shall get the crux of the matter out of the way. Do I approve of fox hunting. Simple answer 'No'. From a personal viewpoint it a pastime from which ...
...competition against nature, against the fox and it is in later years that we see the development of sport as being predominantly structured by model of games and play that can have a determined end and sense of competition. I shall not bore you with the sociology of it any longer! But If you did want to read up on Elias's study, and I have done it no justice here but tried, You can read his essay 'An Essay on Sport and Violence' in the book "Quest ...

Glossary At End

Advantages: Exercise for the horses
Disadvantages: MURDER!!

...And often just because Mr Fox ate some of Mr DOGS ‘bones’. From there, the CATS are given a tiny reason for which to HATE the foxes. Then they can begin their fun and just say that it’s all in the name of ‘SPORT’. Taking revenge on the foxes with the use of DEATH methods is hardly fair. Miles worse actually than the fox just picking off a few ‘bones’ to ensure its survival. It’s quite a SELFISH way ...
...go. What will KILLING that fox prove and what will it be worth to DOG or CAT dead?? A fur coat???……you’d be beaten up just walking down the street!! _______________________ However, I often need to remind CAT that riding his skateboard around the countryside can be a DANGEROUS business. Experienced riders will have no problem leading the chase (or ‘ride’ as it should more often be compared to), but the for less experienced ...

Live and Let Live COUNTRYFOLK THAT IS

Advantages: Keeps an awful lot of people employed
Disadvantages: Upsets the Townies

...all dying to see a fox torn to shreds. The majority hunt for the thrill of riding through the countryside over farmer’s land, which they would not have permission to ride on otherwise. I’m sure that at the end of the day they really couldn’t care less whether a fox has been caught or not. Incidentally I own a couple of dogs and a fox was daft enough to come mooching around our bins one evening and was killed quicker than swatting ...
...why, although I have never fox hunted myself, I wouldn’t vote against it either. Leave country people to their way of life is what I say. There are more horrific things in the world to put your energy into changing. Lets get upset about the photo recently in the papers of a Chinese baby girls dead body lying in the gutter next to the hot dog van. In my eyes a mangy fox doesn't compare. ...

Today Fox Hunting, Tomorrow The World

Advantages: ====
Disadvantages: ====

I grew up in the countryside and most of my family were Crofters and fisherman, and I have alays been ferventley opposed fox hunting. Ok lets us qualify this hunts where the fox is killed by the dogs, I object to. I have no objection to using dogs to flush out the animal and then shoot it. This is a form of responsible pest control, wheather or not control of the fox population needed is subject to a varied debate. One I do not know the answer to, but lets put it this way in my experience more foxes end up as road kill than at the dubious mercy of the dogs. What are my objections to fox hunting then:- It is a completley pointless, inhumane and barbaric so called sport. Have you ever seen a pack of dogs kill an animal it is not nice contary to all arguments from the pro-hunting lobby dogs do not make a clean kill, if the fox is ...

Review of Should fox hunting be banned in England and Wales?

Fox Hunting

Advantages: Read review
Disadvantages: Read review

I've written an opinion about this before, but it was taken away for some reason. However, now that it is back, I will re-write it and make it as neutral as possible. I've never taken part in a fox hunt before as I don't ride, but have always lived in the country and have seen many hunts take place. I also have a fair bit of knowledge about conutry life, so here goes... I don't really know where I stand on this debate. I'm not entirely sure that I agree with fox hunting, but also do not agree with most of the arguements against it either - most of which seem to be about the welfare of the fox. I will try any analyse all aspects fairly in this opinion. 1. Fox Welfare. The most common arguement (in my opinion) against fox hunting is that it is barbaric and cruel to the fox. This is not true. When (if at all) the fox gets caught by ...

FOX HUNTING IN ALL ITS GLORY ...OR NOT

Advantages: A DIFFERENT ASPECT ON FOX HUNTS TO BE CONSIDERED
Disadvantages: POSSIBLY NOT INTERESTING TO ALL.

FOX HUNTING IN ALL ITS GLORY ?OR NOT. YES for the HUNT but at what PRICE??? As a collector of antiques, I would like to say on behalf of the hunt I actually do very well from collectables and pictures. Anyone interested in Fox hunting is always overjoyed at being presented with A beer mug, wine glasses, table mats, pictures and many more such gifts found in the car boot sales and antique fairs. BUT?..as an anti-fox hunting person I also see the other side of the coin?..Having lived on a farm for the last ten years, right next door to where the Hunt regularly meet as a base for their start off, I am sorely perturbed by their attitude and one upmanship. TRAPPED by the HUNT but not only the FOX The horse boxes arrive early in the morning, parking where ever there is a place, unload their horses, then the hounds arrive in ...
