A few weeks ago my nephews and niece came to sleep at my house, my youngest nephew wanted me to read a story before he went to bed and Fox in Socks by Dr Seuss was the one he picked. I gave him a choice of Dr Seuss books but he chose this one, as he'd never heard it before.
Dr Seuss (pseudonym of Theodor Seuss Geisel) was born on 2nd March 1904 and died on 24th September 1991. During his lifetime he wrote nearly 50 children's books. He was probably most famous for The Cat in the Hat, which has also been made into a film.
The whole book is written in rhyme which I think makes it more enjoyable for the children listening. The general story line is Mr Fox is trying to get Mr Knox to lots of different tongue twisters but poor Mr Knox just cannot get his tongue around them (I don't blame him - I found some of them pretty difficult myself!) The first page introduces the story with four words and four illustrations, fox, socks, box, Knox (an unusual yellow creature). Throughout the story we meet lots of interesting characters, including chicks with bricks, Sue who sews crow's clothes and a Goo-Goose who chews gooey goo. Mr Knox gets very frustrated with Mr Fox because he's "had enough " he "can't say such silly stuff" The story is fast paced and exciting for the children. The illustrations are bright and colourful and there are lots of things to talk about with your child. Some of the illustrations are quite amusing.
This is a Green Back book which means it's ideal for children just beginning to read on their own. There is lots of rhyme and repetition, which makes it easier for the child to read. I think a child will need to fell quite confident before reading this book, as some of the tongue twisters are hard to say. They will still enjoy listening to it though.
I asked the children if they enjoyed Fox in Socks and what they liked about the story:
Darius
"What do you know about tweetle beetles? Well... When tweetle beetles fight, it's called a tweetle beetle battle. And when they battle in a puddle, it's a tweetle beetle puddle battle. AND when tweetle beetles battle with paddles in a puddle, they call it a tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle. AND... When beetles battle beetles in a puddle paddle battle and the beetle battle puddle is a puddle in a bottle... ...they call this a tweetle beetle bottle puddle paddle battle muddle." (From Fox in Socks, Dr Seuss)
And so it goes on. Darius said he liked the tweetle beetles fighting. At the end of the book Mr Knox puts the fox into the bottle as well. Darius found this especially funny.
Dominick
He said he enjoyed the whole story, but he too thought it was funny when the Fox was put into the bottle. Personally I think this is a good ending and it obviously appealed to both my nephews.
Toni
As Toni is only 7months old, she doesn't have a lot to say on the matter! I read the story to her at a different time to when I read it to the boys. She sat quite contentedly and happily looked at the pictures and gurgled for about 7 or 8 pages before she tried to eat the book!
I think this is a lovely book, which appeals to children of all ages. I will definitely be reading it to the children again in the future.
The rrp of this book is £4.99 and it's 61 pages long.
