...I ordered my FreecomDVDRecorderLSUSB2.0 after my CD/DVD drive packed up on my 15 month old HP Desktop. I wanted it mainly to load CD ROM and burn DVD's from movies already converted to DVD format on my hard drive. Being that my PC had no disk drive I relied upon this external drive to load the bundled DVD burning software (Roxio 9). This took several days and many attempts. Then I tried burning my first DVD. After taking 3 hours to do a task that previously took about 30 minutes, this recorder produced a disc that no dvd player in my home recognised (and I have 4). I found the user interface very unfriendly and it simply didn't work. Needles to say, I'll be getting a refund!...

...I had just recently purchased and fitted a fire-wire card (i-Link) so I could transfer my videos on to my computer at greater speed than USB, edit them, add titles and music and burn them on to CD in S-VCD format which could be viewed on my domestic DVD player. The problem was, that I was limited to a maximum of 45 minutes on each CD and the finished movies didn't have chapters as they would on proper DVD disks. If I was to impress my friends and family (or should I say bore them), with my video works of art, then S-VCD would not do the trick. What I needed was a DVDrecorder and with another birthday coming up, it was off to PC World.
***Jargon Buster: (S-VCD means Super Video Compact disk - there is also VCD which means Video Compact Disk - these are video movies that can be burned onto an ordinary CD and created on a standard CD...

...-hand side (or top if you've gone for the vertical orientation) of the case, and the panel folds opens and the tray slides out. Also on the front panel is a small status LED. When it lights up green, the drive is powered on (there's a power swith on the back of the unit, along with all the other connections), and an orange/red color indicates that it is working on a CD/DVD.
Connection options are Hi-Speed USB2.0 (also works with USB 1.1) and i.LINK (FireWire/IEEE1394) - I've used USB (very easy plus & play installation) and certainly seems fast enough for me ! DVD+R burning speed is a (claimed - I've never actualy burned a full disk) 16X max, burning a full DVD in approximately 6 minutes - although it should be noted that if you're working with movie footage, the "compilation" of the files can take considerably longer than the actually DVD...
