Freecom Hard Drive Pro Hard drive 250 GB

Advantages: Capacity, web server, ftp server, torrent client, 1Gb Lan
Disadvantages: It can corrupt data

...In short: Freecom Network Drive Pro 500Gb is good idea, bad software, terrible support. I bought this unit couple weeks ago. Promises were high: NAS, web server, ftp server, even torrent client; software is basicaly mini-Linux distribution. At begining, all looked fine; than I started to use it more heavily and disovered that: if your unit has firmware 4.2.7 and you use this unit with Windows clients, it can corrupt your data: http://www.vesic.org/english/blog/hardware/freecom-network-driv e-pro-500-gb-a-sad-story/ Reported to support, called support, reported in forums, nothing happened. After 10 days, w/o any feedback from support, I returned my unit. Be careful when using this unit with Windows clients or wait until newer firmware is published.... Read review

...I totally agree with first reviewer. Worked out of the box. I partitioned the 400 GB into two drives using Partition Magic 8 (which had previously baulked at a 160 GB internal HDD) and am using one for storage of digital images (duplicates to CD/DVD backups). Mine, even after three hours use, did not get hot - rather a nice warm value. It works very quietly and I can fully recommend this make and model as exceptionally good and extremely good value for money. When I think back to the 40 MB disc I used for years (Drivespaced, too) I cannot but think what fantastic value for money this is. As a supplement to my internal 2 X 120 GB HDDs, it will provide an additional capacity for my growing storage of high quality digital images (I am now a retired PRO Photographer and teacher of, says he blushingly, high international reputation)... ...I purchased one of these hard drives a good 6 months ago. Still running perfectly and I use it daily. 120gb is big enough to fulfill the needs of the majority of users. Altho larger capacity hard drives are available from freecom. Maybe the best thing about this hard drive, is its small size and portability, fits in your jeans pocket, can easily take those most important files anywhere you need them. I personally even use it in conjunction with my DVD player which has USB compatibility, to view my files such as Photos & Videos straight onto my TV. Another good thing about the hard drive, comes with software that enables you to backup your computer onto the external hard drive. Overall, certainly worth the money for portablity, reliability and general use.... Read review
