This hard drive is perfect. It is 500gb in size, which is more than enough for storing hundreds of films, thousands of documents, music, etc... You will not run out of space for a long time. --------------- Installation --------------- The box came through the post, i opening it, pluged it in the mains, connected the USB cable into my PC, them inserted the instalation CD that came with it with some added software. The drive itself is plug and play, meaning on Windows XP, it will be recognised automatically. The default file system needs to be changed to FAT32 but this is an easy adjustment with a click of the mouse. ------ Use ------ The noise output is minimal, and so is the heat output. There is no fan so there isonly noise from the motor inside. The noise from the fans on my PC drowns that out, so i dont even notice ...

Freecom 500Gb External USB Drive

Advantages: fast, spacious and very quiet
Disadvantages: none really...

- Windows does not need drivers, you do get a disc with the drive that contains some Freecom software but I haven't used it yet. Within minutes of installing the drive I was transferring over 300GB of data to it and in use I have found the drive to be almost silent, even when transferring gigabytes of data you can only just about hear the drive running and the transfer rates seem excellent for a USB drive (although I haven't actually checked what the rates actually are). The casing does get a little warm in use but nothing to worry about and not too hot to touch, All in all I am very pleased that I chose this model and will certainly purchase another one when the need arises, I use this drive every single day and would recommend it without hesitation. I have had several external drives over the years and currently also have a WD MyBook 500Gb ...

Freecom 400GB external USB Hard drive

Advantages: Fast, high capacity storage. Well built, looks good. 2 year warranty, No fan.
Disadvantages: No fan.

Freecom before as they've always looked a bit cheap and nasty so this would be an interesting experience. The box did feel reassuringly heavy though, a good start. ############### # What's in the Box? ############### Apart from the drive, the box contained a small light external PSU, a USB lead and a CD with some backup software. The case is made of extremly solid and heavy aluminium with a silver plastic front piece with a sexy blue '400GB' light (yes, you can have sexy lights. Really.) at the front just to prove how big it was. The finish is excellent and I have to say, if this is anything to go by, I'm converted to Freecom. Unlike the picture here, my unit has the aluminium finished in matt black which looks really nice on top of my black PC. It's also surprisingly compact - not that much bigger than a hard drive at 20x11.5x4 cms ...
