The Freecom can also burn dual layer DVDs which means that, you can get almost double the amount of movies (i.e. up to 8.5GB) on one Dual Layer disk, but they do tend to cost a little more than the standard DVD disks.
Another thing that is useful regarding this drive, is that using Nero (that was packaged with the drive), I can back up any computer file I wish to DVD and this gives me 4.7GB (that is 4,812.8 megabytes) ... more

When I first went in search of a DVD Re-writer, I was very tempted by getting an internal one to save desk-space and they were cheaper. But after some consideration I opted for the external because we have two computers and a laptop and it's just a question of plugging it in to the USB port of any machine I want to work with. Because it also plays DVD movies, it makes it really handy when I am having that long week-end staying at relatives and there's nothing to watch on TV. I can simply plug it into my laptop and watch any DVD movie of my choice. {Please note:it works a little slower on USB1}

Another thing that is useful regarding this drive, is that using Nero (that was packaged with the drive), I can back up any computer file I wish to DVD and this gives me 4.7GB (that is 4,812.8 megabytes) of storage on a DVD disk in comparison to 700 MB (megabytes) that can be stored on CD-R or RWs. So as you can imagine, I now have fewer worries of losing my files should my hard drive decide to die on me.
I have been amazed at the way the price of the DVD burners have come down in price over the years. When I first became interested in burning DVD, I was looking at forking out £200+ for one, but now they can be found on Ebay for around £20 second-hand and brand new from between £40 and £90 for various models from various dealers found around the internet after a google search.
In summary: I have owned an external CD-RW from Freecom (from the days before my PC came with an internal CD-RW fitted), that is still going strong. I can strongly recommend the Freecom products that I have always found to be dead easy to use by simply plugging into the USB port. Drivers come with the product, but I found it worked straightaway with my current Windows XP.

Hybrid data disks (Mac and PC compatible)
Singular Mac disks
Extended Hybrid disks
Extended Mac disks
Audio Cd's
Will copy from another selected drive
and enhanced formats such as MP3 disks
It can write at fast speeds, up to 42x which is handy if you've invested in some high quality high-speed disks! The write quality is very good, and it can even record on those cheaper disks that some machines dont like to use.
As well as copy disks, it also erases CDRW's and using quick erase will do it in seconds.
The software (Roxio Toast) is easy to use, and easy to install. On both pc and mac, u can plug the drive into a USB slot and then put in the CD, follow the install wizzard ...
