In today's world mobility has become a key factor. People who are on the road carry their whole office with them - notebook, mobile phone, PDA, external hard drive. Imagine what can happen when you're late for a flight, running to the gate, and your external hard drive accidentally falls from your notebook case or out of your jacket pocket onto the floor - it breaks. Hundreds of hours of work, gigabytes of spreadsheets, documents, photos - all gone. Not anymore! Freecom offers the ToughDrive - the ideal external storage solution for people on the move. Fitted with an internal anti-shock frame and a unique soft silicon cover, it can withstand bumps and drops so your drive is still fully functional after it has dropped. The ToughDrive ensures you can still access your valuable files.

...I purchased this "Toughdrive" to store my ever-growing digital music collection. It would work sporadically, often turning itself off. I emailed Freecom, who informed me it was a power related issue (they send you a free power adapter if you live in the UK). One marketed feature of the Freecom Toughdrive is that it derives its power from the USB port, and hence doesn't require any extra plugs. As a consequence, they are not sold with the necessary component to operate properly with low-powered notebooks. By this point, my Mac iBook wouldn't even detect that it was plugged in to the USB port. I got my power adapter, (which I had to buy from another company because I live outside the UK), and it STILL doesn't work. I want to return it, but can't because it has all my files on. AVOID THIS PRODUCT AT ALL COSTS!...

Advantages: Capacity, web server, ftp server, torrent client, 1Gb Lan Disadvantages: It can corrupt data
...In short: Freecom Network DrivePro 500Gb is good idea, bad software, terrible support.
I bought this unit couple weeks ago. Promises were high: NAS, web server, ftp server, even torrent client; software is basicaly mini-Linux distribution.
At begining, all looked fine; than I started to use it more heavily and disovered that: if your unit has firmware 4.2.7 and you use this unit with Windows clients, it can corrupt your data:

Reported to support, called support, reported in forums, nothing happened.
After 10 days, w/o any feedback from support, I returned my unit. Be careful when using this unit with Windows clients or wait until newer firmware is published....

Advantages: Extremely durable, vast capacity, simple to use, reasonable price Disadvantages: Not always plug & pay ; needs software installation on a few PC's
...One thing about joining Ciao it encourages you to look objectively at the products you own or use regularly particularly if someone else may benefit.
A product I like very much, use regularly and have had no problems with whatsoever is the FreecomToughDriveProHarddrive 120 GB. This was given to me as a present by the man in my life (who in truth could be described as an IT geek) I have had several memory sticks in the past as I frequently carry projects to and from home, work, meetings and conferences and they have become a real part of my life and one that I couldn’t manage without ( sad but true)
I’ve had problems in the past from loosing memory sticks ( not too bad if I can find them again !) because they are small or because the fiddly little clips break away (I used to keep them clipped to my car keys for safety (ha), and I...

What with all the videos and photos I had on my mac, I needed some good back up storage. I was recommended to go for the something in the Lacie range. For me the d2 Quadra 320gb was an excellent choice. It won't lose data the way some of the ones with more
