I started using Freederm gel about 2 months ago, I basically figured, give it a go, after all, I'm 23 and still getting quite a lot of spots! It cost £8.75, which is a lot of money, but you do get a lot for your money. Only a thin layer is needed over the affected areas, so the tube of 25g really does last for a long time.
I noticed an improvement straight away, the red spots looked smaller and less sore. The product claims to be "a treatment for mild to moderate acne" with "an anti-inflammatory", this I think is where they stick to their promises because it does seem to have an anti-inflammatory effect on the sore, red spots very quickly. But better than that, my whole face seemed much clearer and fresher looking. I noticed at Boots that the label called it "treatment for acne and acne scars". It was the treatment of the scars, which interested me originally. I have to say that at first the gel did seem to be helping with some of the scars, although thinking back, this may actually have just been the effects of the gel clearing the skinin general that made me think that, maybe with continual use it will help the scars though.
The negative points about this product are that its doesn't continue to work in the way it did at first because, I suppose it works on clearing the red, inflamed spots, but after that it's done all it can really so you do get left with the marks where the spots were that you just have to wait to fade.
This product has to be used with the rest of a proper daily facial routine, i.e. washing your face every morning, with a mild soap, or a medicated face wash, and keeping it moisturised also, as dehydration of the face doesn't do it any good at all.
Their active ingredient is 4% Nicotinamide, which gives the anti-inflammatory affect and is much more effective than the previous ingredients used in similar treatments, such as Benzoyl Peroxide, which left the skin dry, sometimes sore and had a bleaching effect on clothing. The 4% Nicotinamide also means that the gel is not sticky, it is clear, it does not bleach fabrics and it doesn't dry out or irritate the skin.
It can also be used under some make-up, if a thin layer is applied to the spot(s). But if you find that it can't then this is definitely the kind of product that you can just have on your face without people being able to tell, unlike the white creams with Benzoyl Peroxide.
So to summarise, I do think that this is a great gel to use for the bigger, more inflamed, sore acne and spots, but it's not an everyday-use gel, because to put it simply, it won't work on everyday spots!
I will continue to use this product, until my skin sorts itself out!!
