Freedom's landing was the first book, and is based on the 1970 short story The Thorns of Barevi. I admit to not knowing if the short story is one Anne McCaffrey has written, but I would imagine it is. This book has unusual twists and turns that have believability (hard when the subject matter is out of this world).
It is necessary to read the first 2 books in the series to get the best from the book and I would not recommend anyone try and start this series in the middle. With some of McCaffrey's work this is possible, but not with this one. ...
