Review of "Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg"
I used to study American studies at FAU, and I found my stay there quite enjoyable.
First of all, I'd like to point out that the University of Erlangen is very diverse. They offer a variety of courses in various ares. You can find a complete list on their website:
The whole town is known as a university town. It is full of students and there is always something going on. There are many pubs, bars and cafes and plenty of part time student job opportunities. The atmosphere within the university itself is exceptionally good. The lectures are quite full, but the seminars or other specialist courses are kept relatively small (usually no more than 15 students, depending on the subject, of course). There is a good contact between students and teachers, and they are usually available in their office hours, after class and via email if there are questions or concerns.
What I found impressive was the so-called "sprachenzentrum", the language centre, which enables every student to study as many foreign languages as their time allows for free. They offer every language you can imagine, from French and Greek to Finnish or Dutch. The quality of teaching was acceptable, some teachers were very good, others did not have such a high standard in their classes. But I suppose that is the same everywhere.
There is a main library in the centre of Erlangen as well as individual libraries in each faculty. You can usuallt borrow any book for about a week in the faculties' libraries and up to 2 months from the main library.Unfortunately there is just one small computer room for everyone with no own PC, so it can get quite full very quickly and you might have to queue for a while until you can access a PC.
Most faculties are located in Erlangen (mostly the humanities), whereas the economical faculties are located in Nuremberg, which is about 20 minutes away by train or car. There is also plenty of student accomodation. I was lucky enough to get an apartment with own kitchen and bathroom. Other halls have shared showers adn kitchens, but there are several very modern ones for a good price. Mine was about £100 per month plus phone plus electricity.
If you are considering a semester in Germany, I would definitely recommend Erlangen University. It is a friendly place with a lot to offer for everyone.
