...This is an interesting view by the great friend of Goethe’s Friedrich Schiller of the fight between Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart for the British crown. Historically it is incorrect but it is a delightful portrayal of honour in conflict with the passions. Elizabeth turns out to be the villain and the more beautiful, tender and human Mary is the moral winner despite her demise at the end. This is one of the masterpieces of German Classicism and should not be missed for anyone interested in that. It is however rather laboured and has many peripheral characters.... Read review
