    We've all heard of the expressions "to go with one's heart rather than with one's head", and "to have a change of heart", but what if the heart in question were to be not the one we were born with, but one which had previously belonged to somebody else? What effect, if any, would a change of heart in the literal sense have on our state of mind or on our behaviour? And would our personality remain the same or would we begin to take on the characteristics of the heart's former owner; begin to dream about events that only that person could have witnessed, perhaps?     Friends, Lovers and Chocolate. I borrowed this book from my husband who was given a huge pile of Alexander McCall Smiths books at Christmas. Isabel Dalhousie has many friends, she is a spinster Philosopher living in Edinburgh, and is the Editor of "the Review of Applied Ethics", she enjoys a "Genteel" life, with housekeeper Grace looking after her, although she doesn't live-in. Grace is more down to earth but does enjoy going to spiritualist meetings and has met a nice man there. Jamie is a young Musician, a bassoonist and he teaches adolescents in his home and also plays in chamber orchestras ... more

    My main criticism of The Sunday Philosophy Club, the first book in this series, was that the plot was too ambitious and ended disappointingly and that Isabel simply wasn't interesting - I'm glad to say that both of these faults have been remedied in Friends, Lovers, Chocolate. Although not Alexander McCall Smith's best work, this is a thoroughly enjoyable bit of light reading. Isabel seems more interesting in this novel; perhaps because it's more character-driven rather than relying heavily on a disappointing plot, like the first.
