Well i have quite a lot of friends in america, and they all seem to be using this! I get constant emails from them telling me to sign up, and eventually, i gave in.
So i followed the links that i had been sent telling me that it was quick and painless, which it was really! you choose your own sign in name, a few personal details, most of which are optional, and then add friends who are already in your email contacts list. this is quite clever, but in a way quite scary, because you allow friendster to access your hotmail or yahoo account and it searches through your contacts and sees by their email addresses if they are on friendster already. About half of mine were! However, if they are not on friendster, they give you the option to send them an email to join friendster. This email is
an automated email really, but me not wanting to spam my friends have to dauntingly go through the list and uncheck each person manually. Very very annoying. luckily, its a one time only process though.
Now, the layout of the site is very clean. It uses an orange and white colourscheme which isn't too much like rust.
At the top is a navigation bar, for Home, Profile, My Friends, Blogs, Groups, Discussions, Classifieds and Games.
HOME:
This is the main page you get when you log in. It shows you snapshots of all the other options availble to be honest. A list of your friends, your message summary, groups, all sorts including your horoscope!
MY PROFILE:
This page allows you to fill in details about yourself so that anyone who comes accross your page can read about you. they have self explanatory fields for you to fill in, and you can also be imaginative about yourself and not follow them at all, and put random answers in. when you have finished, you can see how it comes out on the page. You can also upload photos, add a blog and review testimonials here. More about them in a bit.
MY FRIENDS:
This page lists all the people that are on your "friendster" list. Thats it really. you can click on any of these people on your list and you will go into their profile. There is also a "I am friends of" tab, where you can search for people that have similar likings as you do. My blocked users tab is self explanatory, as is Bookmarks, ie, bookmarks of your favourite friends and stuff.
BLOGS
I don't like using blogs. Simply because i don't want the whole world to know what i'm up to every day. Where's my privacy in that?! a blog is pretty much an online journal, or diary shall we say. A lot of people use blogs, why, i don't know. Perhaps they are less security conscious than i am, but hey, they seem to like it. In this page, you can create your own, or you can view other people's blogs that are in your friends list.
GROUPS:
Groups are just little (or rather large in some cases) rings of people that share the same fascination of something, or have something in common. You can even create your group and have your friends join your groups. In the groups, you are alerted to any events and stuff that any other people in your group may wish to post. Groups is a good way of finding people on friendster that have similar interests as you. (I just searched ther groups and there isn't a Ciao.co.uk one!)
DISCUSSIONS:
This is just a huge forum really. Very active, mainly with americans.
CLASSIFIEDS
You can buy and sell stuff here, as well as find a new job, but i've never used it.
GAMES:
I can't really comment on the games because i don't use this feature.
OTHERS
When you visit a profile of one of your friends, you are able to write a testimonial on that person to let other people know what you think of that person. Of course, the person has to approve or reject it if you do write one on them!
Before someone is actually in your friendster list, you have to ask for their "permission" for them to be added. I think this is a security measure, but i've always found that people approve you regardless!
You can add your own photo albums and pictures to friendster to let people know what you look like and what you've been getting up to. This does work, but i've always found it very slow.
There are 3 degrees of friends on friendster. THe first degree are the people that are in your friendster list. The second degree are the people that are in your friend's friendster list, but aren't in yours. A cool thing i've found though is that it can show how you are connected, say there are two people that have the same friend in the second degree, that you didn't know about at all! I thought this was cool because i know a friend who is a DJ, and my other friend, she has a friend who is also a DJ, and knows the DJ friend that i know, but my DJ friend and my other friend don't know each other at all, and i don't know my friend's DJ friend! Confusing? Haha sorry if it is!
So yah, join up if you like, but it is very popular, and because of this, it is very slow at times. I have found a lot of UK people on there, as well as Americans!
