Review of "Fright (DVD)"
Starring: Honor Blackman, George Cole, Susan George
Directed By: David Swift
UK Release Date: 18th January 2010
Everything bowls along nicely in true 70’s horror fashion. The house is spooky, naturally. Amanda’s boyfriend comes around for a bit of fun the bedroom and everything is potentially something terrifying. Alone in the house Amanda is beset by a feeling of menace - the sound of a creaking door or a dripping tap, a creaking door or the ticking of the clock…. a footstep….. a face at the window?
Fright is a true psychological horror, there’s not much actual blood, just a real sense of threat and menace in the air. It’s not a slasher like Jason or Freddy, it’s a lot subtler than that.As for the casting, George is perfect for the role and does a fine job, although Dennis Waterman as her boyfriend is pretty lightweight, nothing special about his performance really. Cole and Blackman do shine however, although of course have less screen time.
Director, David Swift ratchets up the tension with aplomb. There are a few current directors that could learn a thing or two from him.Of course it all looks terribly dated now but if you allow yourself to become immersed in the story this is still a thriller/chiller/horror treat to be enjoyed.
